Would like to see the 25 yr old, former first round pick return. Yes, Clint Everts!

  2. #2 by dd - November 13th, 2009 at 14:08

Did the Nats not release Orr, who is listed on the PDF?

  3. #3 by Brian Oliver - November 13th, 2009 at 14:09

They outrighted him to Syracuse is the last move I saw

  4. #4 by JayB - November 13th, 2009 at 16:10

Not much to worry about losing on that list! We must still be one of the very worst Farm Systems out there.

Because of a list of six year minor league F/A?

The names I was able to pull together for all times is much the same as the Nationals list.

  6. #6 by Brian Oliver - November 13th, 2009 at 16:28

Texas, Florida & Oakland were 1-2-3 in Baseball America’s top minor league organizations. Here is a sampling of their 6yr minor league F/A

Texas – Bryan Corey, Adam Fox, Ryan Freel, Brian Gordon, Dustin Majewski, Travis Metcalf, Elizardo Ramirez, Joshua Rupe, Kevin Thompson, & Mike Wood

Florida – Matthew Desalvo, Nate Field, Clay Hensley, Brian Lawrence, Henry Owens, Michael Rabelo, Michael Ryan, Levale Speigner, & Nick Ungs

Oakland – Shawn Chacon, Dewon Day, Chris Denorfia, Christopher Gissell, Daniel Haigwood, Scott Patterson & Jerome Williams

Nice to see familiar faces like Brian Lawrence, Jerome Williams and Levale Speigner on the 6yr minor league FA list and to think they were once in the majors for us…thank goodness we have made forward progress on that front!!

On the Nats list, I would like to see an effort to protect Everts..maybe, but anyone else we can only hope someone takes them off our hands.

Former Nats from my quick scan

Ed Rogers Brandon Watson Bobby Brownlie Antonio Perez Michael Restovich Brian Lawrence Levale Speigner Michael O’Connor Tim Raines Jr. Alejandro Machado Jim Ed Warden Jerome Williams Gary Majewski Larry Broadway Alex Cintron Chad Cordero Jerry Owens Prentice Redman Steven Shell Ramon Ortiz Trey Webb Charlie Manning Winston Abreu Henry Mateo Mike Hinckley James Lehman

  9. #9 by Catocony - November 13th, 2009 at 17:23

Has Chad Cordero made much progress in coming back from injury? He’s missed two seasons at this point, is he done or will he be able to come back as a middle reliever somewhere?

Out of all the guys, I say put Everts on the 40-man. I think he’s the only one on that list really worthy of a definite spot. Just think how back in late 06, Kory Casto was being touted as the starting left fielder to replace Alfonso Soriano. It’s amazing, looking at this list of former Nats plus our 6-year guys, just how bad the farm system was in 2005. Hinkley, Casto, Broadway, all those guys were touted as future stars. Now they’re all pretty much career AAAA talent at best.

Hence “mostly” when it came to those that have slithered away…

I’d have to second Catocony on Everts being the lone guy to rescue from this list – the rest can be scattered to the wind, much the way both Nats and Mets fans wish they could with Omar Minaya.

  11. #11 by Todd Boss - November 13th, 2009 at 18:28

Correct me if i’m wrong, but do we really have to “protect” these guys as 6yr Minor League FAs? Don’t we just have to give them a call and re-sign them to another one year minor league deal?

I’m sure Brian’s working on his analysis of who we should protect from the rule5 draft. Might not be too many names on it, looking at who’s eligible from our 2006 draft class and who really is Major League ready.

  12. #12 by BinM - November 13th, 2009 at 18:40

I think RP Osvaldo Rodriguez (IFA-2003, LAD), RP Yunior Novoa (IFA-2002, CWS) & OF Francisco Placencia (IFA-2001) might also qualify for Brian’s list.

  13. #13 by Ric - November 13th, 2009 at 19:29

Brian: I think BinM is right in #12. Also, doesn’t Seth Bynum qualify?

And, not sure about Kown (04 draft) and Chris Rivera.

What about Orr and Kensing – since they were outrighted to AAA, are they eligble also?

  14. #14 by Brian Oliver - November 13th, 2009 at 20:35

Those are the only guys that I know have filed for free agency to date

  15. #15 by BinM - November 13th, 2009 at 20:46

@Ric: From the bottom up – I think Orr & Kensing could declare FA as Arb-eligible (3+years ML service), but non-rostered players; They have apparently chosen not to, so far. Kown may have been a “draft & follow”, signed in 2005 by DET; Rivera apparently didn’t sign until 2007 w/SEA, but may have been drafted earlier. S. Bynum looks like he should be included, having signed as a US-born UFA in 2004.

  16. #16 by BinM - November 13th, 2009 at 20:47

Brian: Thanks for the clarification – I’ll stop nit-picking.

He’d have to be resigned, first.

Brian: Have you heard anything about Marrero being injured? He and Snyder haven’t played the last few games. Snyder is apparently off the roster.

    http://masnsports.com/2009/11/bryce-harper-update.html

It sounds like Harper is really dominating, as is the team.

  20. #20 by catocony - November 14th, 2009 at 11:55

To clarify, the Nats should sign Everts to a major-league deal. He has his three options, so even if he doesn’t make the team out of spring training, he can be optioned. I don’t think any other team would give him more than a minor-league deal with maybe an invite to spring training, so he would certainly sign with the Nats.

He’s had a good year or so. Maybe what he did this year was a fluke and next year he’s injured again or doesn’t continue progressing. But, with the investment already made and the results from this year, it makes sense to keep him around. A major-league deal on our 40-man guarantees that. Not doing that could lead him to signing elsewhere.

We have room on the 40-man and certainly a need for middle relievers at both AAA and in DC. I don’t see much of a downside to signing him. If it doesn’t pan out, he’s waived and end of reclamation project.

  21. #21 by Jeff E. - November 14th, 2009 at 12:41

I wonder if HS teammmate, Scott Kazmir, will suggest to the Halos to ink Everts to add depth to their relief corp??? My first thought after that Teahan deal to Chisox was if Drayton Moore would sign Kory casto to try to find some lightning in his bottle @ Omaha. Majewski never found his lightning in OAK/TOR/TEX after much bally-hoo. Take a flier on him??? Doug harris familiar with him. Mike Gonzalez would be neat in the pen. Brandon Phillips truly on the block in CINN-whispers?????????

  22. #22 by John - November 14th, 2009 at 15:53

No Marrero again. Strasburg off to a good start.

  23. #23 by cass - November 14th, 2009 at 16:48

    3.2 innings, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 H, 0 R.. 64 pitches, 36 strikes

Strasburg had a good day, though he didn’t go deep, presumably due to pitch count.

Twitter reports indicate 3 of the Ks were on his changeup. Fastball reportedly up to 99 but more often around 95-98. Good action the curveball, apparently.

Any reason why Sean Rooney caught for Peoria Saguaros on Nov 11?

  25. #25 by Robin - November 14th, 2009 at 22:05

We are in Arizona so I will find out why Sean Rooney caught for Peoria and will post it. Chris Marrero is not injured – just not feeling well. Strasburg and Storen looked great today. All the Nationals players are looking good!

  26. #26 by John - November 14th, 2009 at 22:38

Thanks Robin. I hope Marrero’s back for next Saturday.

  27. #27 by RD exposfan - November 15th, 2009 at 00:20

    Thanks Robin

  28. #28 by Sue Dinem - November 15th, 2009 at 08:45

Chances are, Rooney caught simply to give the other catchers some rest. There was a bit in the BA blog about how the AFL has been a grind, particularly for ‘08 first-round draft picks playing their first full season.

  29. #29 by Jake - November 15th, 2009 at 12:16

I’d keep Ricardo Nanita. Look at his winter league stats. He is hitting cleanup and hes hitting really well. By the way guys if you didn’t know the Licey Tigers are streaming all their games live ONLINE so we can watch Desmond, Dukes, Jaimie… http://www.licey.com its in Spanish but you can figure it out.

  30. #30 by estuartj - November 16th, 2009 at 11:00

Where is Chris Marrero? Hasn’t played in AFL since the 10th.

  31. #31 by Brian Oliver - November 16th, 2009 at 11:05

Robin had an answer in comment #24 … not injured, just not feeling well

  32. #32 by NICK - November 16th, 2009 at 11:19

Hi Brian. How much of an impact will the departure of some scouts and execs to the Jays have on the Nats? Are their replacements equally if not more qualified.

  33. #33 by Brian Oliver - November 16th, 2009 at 11:26

Nick – That’s hard to truly quantify in the near term. Dana Brown was the guy who ran the drafts (for the most part) for the last five plus years. He has had his hits and misses but overall handled the draft OK, more or less.

Trying to assess the value of the scouts lost is tougher. I’m not sure how integral any of the guys lost were. Additionally, we won’t know who is being brought in since those typically aren’t the press releases the team makes known

I’m trying to see if I can get a handle on it but it is going to take some time

  34. #34 by markfd - November 16th, 2009 at 11:31

Brian – any chance we can gt an update on the Caribbean Winter Leagues and how our guys are doing down there?

  35. #35 by NICK - November 16th, 2009 at 13:02

Thanks Brian. I guess I’m really curious to know whether the new hirees are well regarded throughout the industry or not. I’m a strong believer in Mike Rizzo, but it’s easy to garner praise when you are replacing anything and anythone that has to do with Bowden. In other words, are Rizzo’s hirings and firings really for the better or is it change for the sake of change and he really changed 4 quarters for a dollar?

  36. #36 by Robin - November 16th, 2009 at 19:35

Answers to previous questions: Chris Marrero was at today’s game but did not play. He is feeling better. Sean Rooney caught for Peoria to give the catcher a rest. Some players have gone home due to various reasons. Phoenix clinched their division today so will play Saturday in the Championship Game.

  37. #37 by cass - November 16th, 2009 at 20:35

Forgive my off-topicness, Robin, but do you know if there’s any way to get a Desert Dogs cap outside of attending one of the games? I haven’t found them anywhere.

    Definitely looking forward to Saturday.

  38. #38 by Robin - November 16th, 2009 at 20:48

Cass, I do not know where you can get a Desert Dogs cap other than at the games and I will be glad to purchase one for you. Please ask Brian to give you my contact information.

  39. #39 by cass - November 17th, 2009 at 01:31

    That sounds great, thanks!

i just read the free agent list at bba, the nats actually put a guy that we could really get some benefit out of and did an awesome job for us this pas season, clint everts 1.63era. This decision (org) is really messed up! i hope we dont come in last again. This is absolutely insane..

Since Edgardo Baez is on the “Suspended List”, can he still play winter ball????????? (He’s listed as playing in the Puerto League.)

  43. #43 by Robin - November 18th, 2009 at 10:38

Cass, I did not get your email. Let me know what size hat you want and I will purchase it at today’s game and we will find a way to get in contact. Please send another email.

  44. #44 by cass - November 18th, 2009 at 14:43

Robin, cap size should be 7 5/8.

I’ll try sending you another email, but if you don’t get that, then try emailing me. My username is cassander and I have a gmail account.
