Marrero, Carolina League Hitter of the Week

Potomac 1B Chris Marrero was named the Carolina League hitter of the week for the period July 13-19. Over that timeframe he batted 0.500 and slugged 0.750 with one HR, four RBI and eight runs scored.

Congrats to Marrero. Now: is he promotable?

Or, to put it another way, how much should we discount the numbers considering that (because of past fitness and injury issues) this is his third year in the Carolina League?

Tracee Hamilton in her column today guotes Rizzo as sayin g the guy is our first baseman of the future. Take it for what its worth. He was doing great last year until his injury. It all depends on what happens with Nick. If Nick goes, you see Marrero in AA the rest of this season with a good shot in Training Camp the next to make the club.

Depends on how you want to handle it. I think we ought to trade NJ. That being said, CM is not nearly ready, this year or the next, for MLB. For 2010, promote Eldred to handle the 1st base for the short term (I think he’s worth a shot). Get a serviceable 1st base journeyman in at AAA, move Rhinehrt to DH at Harrisburg, get Marrero at 1st. Marrero may be ready to move to AAA midway next year, to finish 2010 at AAA. 2011 he MAY be ready for MLB. No sooner.

If we move Johnson, Dunn is the 1st baseman. He may not be much defensively, but he isn’t in the OF either. Open up an outfield spot for Dukes, Maxwell, or even Harris regularly.

I agree with RD. Eldred is not exactly ripping up AAA and he’s never shown he’s capable of hitting major league pitching over an extended period. I’d rather see Dunn at 1B. If we endured a year of Dmitri at first base we can hold our noses and watch Dunn.

Can Willingham play any first base?

I’ve been puzzling over this for a while. I think they’re trying to put all possible backup plans in place for a NJ trade. I think that’s why Dmitri is getting a lot more playing time suddenly. And Mike Morse also can play 1st. If that’s not part of the reason they picked up Morse, I wonder what the team sees as his real value.
