Posted by Brian Oliver in Harrisburg (AA), Syracuse (AAA) on September 2nd, 2009
IF/DH Matt Whitney was promoted from Harrisburg to Syracuse, replacing 1B/DH Brad Eldred who was placed on the temporary inactive list. No official confirmation but Eldred and his wife just had a baby, so it may be based upon that.
No replacement in Harrisburg was named.

The Nationals dealt 2B Ronnie Belliard to the Los Angele Dodgers for RHRP Luis Garcia and a player to be named later. The 22-year old Garcia was 5-3 with a 2.92 ERA over 34 appearances for the Midwest League’s Great Lakes Loons. Over 71IP, he struck out 55 and walked 15. A friend of mine is a Dodgers fan and he frequents the Dodger Thoughts site, according to the resident prospect expert there, Garcia is a legitmate relief pitching prospect. The other component to the deal is the PTBNL and that could very likely be a player currently on the 40-man roster who needs to clear waivers. We know from Mike Rizzo’s comments that the PTBNL will be a pitcher. Any player I’d highlight would be just a guess at this point.

Across the Affiliates 08/26/09
Posted by Brian Oliver in Across the Affiliates, Gulf Coast League (R), Hagerstown (A), Harrisburg (AA), Potomac (A), Syracuse (AAA), Vermont (SS), Washington (MLB) on August 26th, 2009
The Nationals signed RHP Livan Hernandez who will make the start today for Washington in Chicago. Hernandez was the Opening Day starter for the Nats back in 2005 and was dealt in to Arizona in August of 2006 for RHSP Garrett Mock and LHSP Matt Chico. Hernandez replaces RHSP Collin Balester on the roster; Balester was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. To open a spot on the 40-man roster for hernandez, Dmitri Young was moved from the 15 to 60-day DL. This move helps the Nats protect the young starters as Hernandez is known as an innings eater (insert other type of eater joke here). The Big Board has been updated with these moves along with a few others.
Syracuse
- Lost 9-6 to Durham (box/gamer). The Chiefs rallied from an early 5-0 deficit but RHP Zack Segovia surrendered three runs on two hits and two walks in the top of the ninth as Syracuse fell to wild card elading Durham. LHP Horacio Ramirez gave up five runs on eight hits and four walks over 6 2/3IP while striking out two. SS Ian Desmond was 1/4 with a triple & run scored; 2B Seth Bynum was 1/4 with a three-run homer; LF/CF Norris Hopper was 2/4 with a run scored; 3B/LF Pete Orr was 2/4 with a run & RBI; and CA Gustavo Molina was 1/3 with a double, run & RBI.
- Notes – No word on what the corresponding move will be to open a spot for Balester.
