Congrats to Lombardozzi for his selection to the SAL “all star team” and to Norris for the recognition as oustanding prospect.

  2. #2 by cjrugger - September 1st, 2009 at 10:18

    So Rosenbaum goes today?

  3. #3 by pm - September 1st, 2009 at 10:19

Is it a bad sign that Norris was named the DH of the team?

  4. #4 by Chris - September 1st, 2009 at 10:26

pm :Is it a bad sign that Norris was named the DH of the team?

It’s no secret that he has struggled behind the plate. He wont be a catcher in the big leagues anyways, so it really doesnt matter all that much. I just wish they would expedite his growth at one of the corner outfield positions by moving him there full time. Maybe next year…

  5. #5 by Pilchard - September 1st, 2009 at 11:07

I would not give up on Norris as a catcher yet. The Nats haven’t. Keep in mind that Norris was drafted out of HS in 2007. So, he has completed what would essentially be his sophmore year in college. There is no doubt that his offense is miles ahead of his defense, but Norris has a good arm and has the tools to develop into at least an average defensive catcher.

  6. #6 by Ronny/Daggerrrrrr - September 1st, 2009 at 11:22

Then where would we put Bryce Harper if Norris stays at catcher?

  7. #7 by Brian Oliver - September 1st, 2009 at 11:30

It doesn’t matter that Norris & Harper play the same position. If both end up developing (which is by no means a certainty) then you cross that bridge then. There are worse problems than having two major league ready catching prospects. You can trade one. Or convert one to a corener IF or OF … not a bad problem to have

  8. #8 by Scott W - September 1st, 2009 at 11:32

Any word on how the Royals – Crow negotiations are going?

What is the deadline to include a player on the AFL roster?

  9. #9 by Chris - September 1st, 2009 at 11:41

Pilchard :Norris has a good arm and has the tools to develop into at least an average defensive catcher.

Agree on the arm, but disagree about his overall catching tools.

  10. #10 by Mark - September 1st, 2009 at 11:41

    Drew Storen… wow.

  11. #11 by nationals fan - September 1st, 2009 at 11:57

Norris just needs some time to develop behind the plate. It just does not happen overnight. He needs a couple of more years before anyone could say he will not be able to do it. His rapid development as a hitter is unreal, and I think people get “spoiled” and expect that of his defense. Patience!

  12. #12 by Scott - September 1st, 2009 at 12:02

Brian, do you think Drew Storen is going to crack the top 100 lists at the end of the season? He’s got to be one of the top couple relief prospects in the minors right now.

I feel like if Baseball America had Samardzija, Daniel Bard, and Chris Perez in the 80-100 range last year, Storen belongs there this year. I mean, this is really a killer year he’s having in his draft season, and he’s actually getting better as he moves up.

  13. #13 by Brian Oliver - September 1st, 2009 at 12:07

Scott – He could be a #95-100 guy. Especially given his performance on the field so far.

  14. #14 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 12:12

Norris was named DH due to this guy:

“Asheville catcher Jordan Pacheco was selected as the Most Valuable Player. Pacheco is currently batting .325 in 111 games, 428 at-bats, with 139 Hits and 13 home runs.”

Norris, instead of MVP, was named “Most Outstanding MLB Prospect”. Which sounds better in the long run!

  15. #15 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 12:17

Lineup for today’s playoff game: Perez, Eu CF Jimenez 2B Cuevas SS Newsome 1B Sanchez, Ad DH Tejeda 3B Nieto, Ad C Montilla, A RF Washiya LF Rosenbaum P

Just underway, Cuevas with 1b and SB but stranded.

  16. #16 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 12:21

After an E by Tejeda, Rosie mows down 3 straight.

They’re facing BJ Hermson, went 6-2 with a 1.35 ERA.

  17. #17 by cjrugger - September 1st, 2009 at 12:41

Pachecho is 37 months older than Norris btw

  18. #18 by Ric - September 1st, 2009 at 12:52

Re: Norris – please don’t forget that he moved to C as a HS senior after played 3B for the first three years. So, he’s basically had only three years of development experience. I would not even think of moving him off catcher for two more years.

  19. #19 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 13:17

GCL Nats 0, GCL Twins 0 after 5, Rosenbaum has given up 2 hits, no walks, K-ed 5.

top of order due up for the Nats, our man Eury to lead off.

btw the Twins have 2 Choi, Hy. Choi Hyeong-rok and Choi Hyun-wook.

  20. #20 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 13:38

Rosenbaum done after 6, Wanel Vasquez comes in for a scoreless inning – on to the 8th.

Waiting for Ruben “Dominican idol” de la Rosa to take the hill – 28 IP, 44 K’s!!, 10 BBs, 0.96 ERA (all 5′9″, 165 lbs of him!).

  21. #21 by peric - September 1st, 2009 at 13:51

It might be why they didn’t promote him. He would have to convert to a new position first? Given Flores injury they do need additional catching prospects. None appear to be showing that they are ready?

Bryce Harper will not be a catcher in the “bigs”. That is a surety. And its going to be 3-5 years from the end of NEXT SUMMER!? Before he even gets close? ~smiles~

I wouldn’t even worry about that guy.

  22. #22 by VladiHondo - September 1st, 2009 at 13:53

Wow! Top of 8, 2 down, Eury gets on by an error by the 1b, gets to 2nd. Then Hendry Jimenez hits it to SS, beats it out, meanwhile, Eury went on the hit and when play goes to 1st, he goes for HOME!

    Out at the plate.

    Speed kills. ;)

  23. #23 by cjrugger - September 1st, 2009 at 13:54

Peric- how many times have you seen Harper play? If you can tell us what position 16 year olds will play in the big leagues then you are being sorely wasted as a poster on this site

Eury Perez thrown out at the plate to end the top 8th, still 0-0

  24. #24 by Ronny/Daggerrrrrr - September 1st, 2009 at 14:05

Brian, do you think it will cost more to sign Bryce than it did to sign Strasburg?

  25. #25 by Scott - September 1st, 2009 at 14:15

This is all ridiculous. I think there’s a chance that the Nationals change Norris’ position in mid-season 2011 if he’s still not progressing, but most likely it will be 2012. He’s 20 years old. He throws out 40+% of opposing basestealers. You don’t move a guy like that off the plate because he’s having problems adjusting to blocking balls in the dirt.

He’s not going to be in the majors before September 2011, and he’s not going to compete for a full-time major league job until 2012, at the earliest. That’s plenty of time.

If you can switch Adam Dunn’s position in mid-season without killing your team, you don’t need to move a 20-year old catcher off the plate 3 years early.

  26. #26 by Brian Oliver - September 1st, 2009 at 14:16

Harper has incredible leverage given he is coming out a year before his high school class is scheduled to be available. He could re-enter the draft in 2011 and still be on pace with his HS counterparts.

End of the day, I think he gets less total than Strasburg but more of a bonus.

    Thank you Scott

  28. #28 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:25

Going to the bottom of the twelfth. Twice the #9 hitter has gotten on and the Nats have used the best hitter in the league to sacrifice him to second. Perez had a .381 BA and won the batting title by almost 50 points.

  29. #29 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:32

For some reason, they took out Adrian Sanchez who was 2-for-3. Some seriously questionable decisions by the Nats.

  30. #30 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:39

Top of the twelfth, Romero on second after stealing. two outs and Nieto at the plate.

  31. #31 by Scott - September 1st, 2009 at 14:39

Or to put it another way – if the Nationals were willing to let Lastings Milledge play the worst CF in the NL for the better part of a season just to see if he make the adjustments necessary to play there, I guarantee they’re not going to give up on Derek Norris because he’s struggling behind the plate in frickin’ low-A ball.

  32. #32 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:40

Nieto comes through!!! 1-0 going to the bottom of 12.

  33. #33 by Brian Oliver - September 1st, 2009 at 14:40

GCL Nats score an unearned run in top of 12th

  34. #34 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:42

Nieto singles in Tejeda(it was he, not Romero on second)

  35. #35 by cjrugger - September 1st, 2009 at 14:44

  36. #36 by John - September 1st, 2009 at 14:45

It’s Smoker’s turn, but Jordan will have had enough rest. It will be interesting to see what they do.

  39. #39 by Paul - September 1st, 2009 at 15:11

Scott : You don’t move a guy like that off the plate because he’s having problems adjusting to blocking balls in the dirt.

I totally agree that they aren’t going to switch his positions. Give the kid some time to develop.

But just as an FYI, past balls and blocking balls in the dirt are totally different things. Balls in the dirt are generally classified as wild pitches, even if the catcher misplays the ball or a better catcher would have had it. (It is much like how first basemen rarely, if ever, get charged with an error for failing to make even the easiest scoop.) Past balls are, generally speaking, balls that the catcher just doesn’t catch or where it is obviously his fault.

Now, I can’t cite Norris’ past balls total off the top of my head, but failing to catch over 20 balls is horrendous. He has to get better at that. I believe that he will.

  40. #40 by Ronny/Daggerrrrrr - September 1st, 2009 at 15:22

How is Norris game calling skills?

  41. #41 by Pilchard - September 1st, 2009 at 15:35

These days at the MLB level (and probably in the minors) the coaching staff calls most of the pitches especially with a young catcher.
