Frank Howard In Syracuse

The Chiefs just issued the following release …

Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse Chiefs announced today that former Major League outfielder Frank Howard will make a special appearance at the team’s 7:00pm game against the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday, July 29.

Howard, a four-time Major League All-Star, will sign autographs on the main concourse from 6:00pm until 6:45pm for Chiefs season ticket holders. He will then throw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch before returning to the concourse to sign autographs for the general public from 7:15pm until 8:00pm.

Season ticket holders must pick up a special autograph ticket from the Chiefs ticket office prior to 5:00pm on Tuesday, July 28 in order to participate in the special autograph session. Each season ticket holder will be limited to one autograph ticket per seat in their account.

Major League baseballs will be on sale on the night of the game or fans may choose to bring their own items to have autographed. There will be a limit of one autograph per person.

Howard signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958 out of Ohio State University and played in eight big league games that summer and nine more the following year. The native of Columbus, OH made the big leagues for good in 1960 when he batted .268 with 23 HR and 77 RBI in 117 games and was named the National League Rookie of the Year.

“Hondo” played for the Dodgers through 1964, winning a World Championship in 1963, before joining the Washington Senators for the 1965 season.

He enjoyed the best years of his career in the nation’s capital, earning a spot on the American League All-Star team four straight years from 1968 through 1971. He led the AL in home runs twice, belting 44 in both 1968 and 1970, and finished second in the league with a career-high 48 long balls in 1969.

Howard moved with the Senators to Texas for the 1972 season, but finished that year with Detroit. He also played for the Tigers in 1973, his last year in the big leagues.

Over the course of 16 Major League seasons, Howard batted .273 with 382 home runs and 1,119 RBI in 1,895 games. Following his retirement, he managed the San Diego Padres and New York Mets and also served as a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, Mets, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Norris is playing for the Suns today, is he getting promoted after the game?

cj – That would be my assumption. With Harrisburg on their All-Star break, let Norris & Rooney play today and then move them

Willems is still on the DL in Potomac. No word on his return timetable.

If rotation holds … Friday – Jack McGeary; Saturday – Kyle Morrison; Sunday – Mitchell Clegg

Have you been twittering Keith Law again, I see he responded to an ESPN rumor that the Nationals were making no progress with Strasburg with the following: “This happens every year. I had emails from Orioles’ fans going bananas that they weren’t going to sign Wieters all summer in ‘07. Same for Rangers’ fans on Smoak last year. He’s going to sign. Just stick your fingers in your ears until they schedule the press conference to announce his signing.”

    Brian,

Do you consider Seth Bynum a prospect worthy of the 40 man roster or a AAAA organization player?

  11. #11 by BinM - July 15th, 2009 at 20:19

Guy – Seth Bynum is 28 years old and has been in the organization since 2004, never reaching the majors. There’s probably a reason for that. He’s having a decent year with the bat in 2009, but still has some defensive liabilities as a MI. Be happy for him having an All-Star worthy season in SYR, but he’s AAA filler material overall.

Thats what I thought. I just ran into him in Portland at the airport for the AAA all star game. He’s a good guy but he’s getting a little long in the tooth.
