Oh I was praying for this day not to come, but congrats to Derrick Norris. He not only deserves the move to Potomac, but hopefully he’s in Harrisburg or higher by the end of the year. I was a catcher for 13 years, and watching him play is a treat. Yeah, he’s a tiny bit unpolished behind the plate, but last night’s game he blocked every crummy pitch tossed at him. And considering he’s learning the position, I can just picture his skills in the future with the right coach and time. And the last time we had an electric bat like his was Justin Maxwell – you just knew something good was to happen! Guess I should be glad I got a bat from Derrick at last night’s game!

    Hooray for Norris and Rooney!

I have a question about J.D. Martin. It seems that the Nationals are reluctant to bring J.D. Martin up, but may do it as a September call up or to limit a starter’s innings or what have you. My question about him is that as a Minor League free agent do we have any rights to him next year? If we have him on the 40 man? or the 25 man? Or anything?

    Thanks!

Rich – If he is not placed on the 40-man roster, Martin would have the option of becoming a minor league free agent

and if I could spell Derek’s name right, it would be a better day. LOL Gotta get out of the beer garden at the game!

Great news on Norris. I hope Holder can start putting it together soon, but he’s off to a very rough start…

Brian – With all this talk about management decisions vis-a-vis minor league player promotions and progressions, and questions regarding the general competence of management after the firing/hiring of Manny/Riggleman, I have a general question for you. What are you hearing around the league about the player development aspect of the Nats? Aside from the scouting staff (which in general I believe have done a good job), do we have in place highly regarded development people? What do people think of our minor league coaches and farm director? It’s one thing to have decent drafts, but if you can’t properly develop the players, then it will be all for not.

I am glad they figured out a way to move Norris up.

  9. #9 by rukidding - July 15th, 2009 at 09:45

What are they going to do with the CA position in Potomac now? Norris deserves/needs to get as much playing time as he can handle. Ivany/Peacock as the back up IMO they do not need 3 CA on the team. With Norris leaving HAGTOWN does 1of them move down? Rooney deserved being moved up. It would not surprise me to see Rooney and Norris with the Nats in the next 3-4 years.

  10. #10 by Brian Oliver - July 15th, 2009 at 09:48

ruk – I would imagine that Norris will get the lion’s share of playing time at catcher and play DH on the days he rests.

As for Hagerstown, I do not know yet. Vermont has three catchers (Sandy Leon, Dan Kilian & Ricky Nolan. Killian & Leon are splitting time pretty evenly. Perhaps they’ll move Nolan (age 23) up to the Suns to split time with Travis Reagan

  11. #11 by mcgalinmd - July 15th, 2009 at 10:10

I would like to see Sandy Leon back to Hagerstown. He caught well when he was here. Bat was sort of cold, but he’s very young.

Great news, congrats to Derrick Norris. He was 3/3 throwing out baserunners last night too btw!

Suns box score is wrong. Guerrero struck out in bottom of the 4th and Curran had the RBI triple. So both Curran and Guerrero were 2/4 on the night. I kept score, as did a friend of mine, our box scores both say it was Curran who had the triple.

Norris deserves the promotion. It was a pleasure to watch him here.

I’d love to see Curran get going with the bat. I’m a big fan of CFs with speed and leadoff type batting ability.

Destin Hood is quietly having a nice start to his 2009 year. Any reports on how he looks defensively?

  17. #17 by mcgalinmd - July 15th, 2009 at 11:42

Norris is still in Hagerstown as of Wednesday AM as he is DH’ing in todays early day game. I assume he’ll be gone after the game?

  18. #18 by Brian Oliver - July 15th, 2009 at 11:48

    That is what I assume.

  19. #19 by dd - July 15th, 2009 at 12:35

seeing that Destin Hood is repeating the GCL after playing 25 games in 2008, he should go the Vermont. His fielding can be worked with the Lake Monsters.

Correction: Guerrero doubled, then Curran tripled, driving in Guerrero.

Curran plays hard. I don’t think I’ve seen a player play harder than he does.

Re Hood: A little patience fellas, he has 143 career AB’s. He’s played well, and would expect him to be in Vermont by the end of the year, but let the kid develop. He was a raw 2 sport athlete coming into this

    Amen to that

Chris Curran is a quick fellow. He’s pretty short, well – very short, but he has some power and runs like the wind. He seemingly gets on base more than he doesn’t. And then runs all over the place. A perfect leadoff hitter. And he has made some great catches in center field lately!

    Brian,

I’m at the EL All-star game in Trenton. HS kid won the HR derby with a metal bat. Lowrance starting in LF. Wilkie pitching the 2nd & Spradlin the 8th.

I’ll post later, letting you know how the Sens reps make out.
