A Draft Review

Andy Seiler is a frequent poster over at John Sickels site and has very good knowledge of the draft as a whole. He has analyzed each and every pick of the Nationals draft and given them a grade of B.

That was swell, Brian. Thanks for linking to it. The folks here are great at answering my beginner-level questions, so here’s another: what does it mean when a team drafts [player] as a [position]? When the pick is made, does the team actually announce something like, “We’re taking Brian Oliver, and we’re going to play him in the outfield”? Or “… Brian Oliver, an outfielder from the US Virgin Islands”?

Scooter – Teams will often say how they want a player listed. As an example, the Nationals drafted Cohl Walla in this year’s draft. He’s committed to Texas and is most likely going to play the OF, but the Nationals asked he be listed as a RHP. Assuming the Nats were to sign him, they would develop him as a pitcher, not a hitter
