DraftWatch 04/03/09

Here is the spreadsheet detailing the weekend games of the guys on the DraftWatch.

Note: I should start seeing the releases detailing the minor league assignments starting today.

Note 2: Interesting read over at MASN about how much (little?) minor league players actually make.

A friend of mine who is a player for Virginia Tech wrote a little review on Ackley that’s linked in my name. Hope it’s useful-he said Ackley’s arm looked good.

I played ball with Bud Smith’s brother, and met Bud a couple times. He told me that he was making $1,100 a month in AAA, then when he got the call up, was making $1,100 per day in the bigs.

The minors are definitely a struggle. Thats why it drives me nuts when you see kids sign for $50,000 and they go out and buy a $45,000 car right away. These kids are not very smart.

The Potomac players who are driving will leave Florida Sunday. The rest of the team team will fly in on Monday afternoon.

I housed and fed single-A players for 3 years. Without the family housing and food(provided for free), it was highly unlikely that these entry-level players would survive. It was a great experience - my way of living the baseball dream! I would do it again in a flash. Great way to get to know future major leaguers and offer them some comforts.

Baseball America wrapped up their coverage of the Dominican Summer League with a review of some of the top prospects (the whole thing is subscription based). One nat made the list

Eury Perez, cf, Nationals: While the Nationals’ international program is currently undergoing renovations, the speedy Perez could be the organization’s top international prospect once righthander Shairon Martis loses his eligibility. Perez, 18, hit .324/.428/.441 in 60 games last year, showing good control of the strike zone by drawing nearly as many walks (32) as he had strikeouts (36). Perez’s plus speed and quick first step play well in center field and on the basepaths, where he stole 28 bases in 34 attempts last year. At 6-foot, 180 pounds, the Dominican-born Perez has a wiry frame and a short swing from the right side.

It’s not the kids that aren’t very smart…they’re kids and that is what any 18 year old would do.

My question would be: Where the hell are the parents? I know a guy whose son (many years ago) was drafted (later rounds) and received a 65K bonus. My friend stepped in and took the check, placed it in an account in his (the dad) name and gave the kid 5 grand with which to play. He told his son, “When you turn 21 or when you decide to leave baseball and pursue something else, I’ll give you the remainder and the interest that came with it. ” By age 20, the kids was out of baseball and used the money to pay for college.

Tim - I have a similar story about a player drafted much earlier. The parameters were the same but with a much larger bonus. I guarantee this player is much happier today

    Brian,

Don’t know whether you discussed it here but I’ve seen no discussion either at WaPo or the NJ blog about Detwiler’s apparently impressive relief performance with the big club a couple of days ago. What have you heard? Can we hope that he has straightened out his early spring struggles?

    Many thanks

TimDZ, I understand the comment about HSers and teenagers.

But Ive seen it at every stop during my playing days, not just high school. In junior college and university, there were people ‘wasting’ their money.

Of course in the case of guys that signed for over a mill, you can understand buying a car and doing what he wants with it. Ive seen that as well, but he’s given a bit more freedom because of the amount. He has since made the bigs and become a regular, so he’s got real money coming in now a days.

    Hi Marc!!!

I agree housing was one of the best experiences ever. Met a lot of great people. I always thought it was crazy how LITTLE these boys actually made!!!

But it also helped out the boys… the housing market (especially in a college town) is horrendous, even now! The cheapest apt you can get is MAYBE 900 a month, gotta shove 4 or more guys in there to pay for it…

I think Vermont is a unique experience and I’ve heard people who went up after here say there is something like it… guess we did/do well :)

It’s always good to hear from a Vermonter!
