Leonard Davis to Syracuse
Posted by Brian Oliver in Harrisburg (AA), Syracuse (AAA) on August 25th, 2009
To make room on the Harrisburg roster for RHRP Jesse Estrada, the Nationals promoted IF/OF Leonard Davis to Syracuse. The Chiefs removed OF Mike Vento from their roster, opening a spot for Davis.
Davis was been a jack-of-all-trades for the Senators playing around both the infield and outfield while hitting 281/340/462 with 14 homers and 51 RBI.

September Call-Ups
Posted by Brian Oliver in Harrisburg (AA), Players, Syracuse (AAA), Washington (MLB) on August 24th, 2009
One week from tomorrow, MLB teams are eligible to call up any player currently on their 40-man as rosters expand for the final month and change of the season. At present, the Nationals currently have a full 40-man roster but this does not mean all of them will be recalled.
In 2008, the Nationals added 11 players through either recalling them (if already on the 40-man), activating them from the DL, or purchasing their contract (if not on the 40-man). In 2007, the Nationals added just eight players.
Typically, the players you see recalled are extra arms for the bullpen, a third catcher, and perhaps an extra outfielder and/or infielder.
This year, we are likely to see some more starting pitchers recalled as the Nationals begin to see some of their younger starting pitchers reach their maximum innings pitched in September. Jim Riggleman mentioned at the press conference yesterday that the Nationals first order of business was to protect the young arms for the future.
With that in mind, the following players are currently on the 40-man but not on the active (25-man roster):
- CA Jesus Flores (on 15-day DL)
- CA Luke Montz (in Harrisburg)
- 1B Dmitri Young (on 15-day DL)
- SS Ian Desmond (in Syracuse)
- OF Austin Kearns (on 15-day DL)
- OF Justin Maxwell (in Syracuse)
- LHSP Scott Olsen (on 15-day DL)
- RHSP Jordan Zimmermann (on 15-day DL)
- LHSP Ross Detwiler (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Shairon Martis (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Marco Estrada (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Luis Atilano (in Syracuse)
- RHRP Ryan Mattheus (on DL in minor leagues)
- LHSP Matt Chico (in Harrisburg)
Additionally, the Nationals have OF Roger Bernadina and RHRP Terrell Young on the 60-day DL. Bill Ladson reported over the weekend that Bernadina was out for the season. There is an outside shot the Nationals activate Young just to accrue a month of service time towards keeping the Rule 5 draft pick who needs 90 days of service time on the 25-man roster to retain his rights.
Of the players on 15-day, all but Kearns are out for the season (as is Mattheus in the minors) meaning they will not be recalled but offer the Nationals the chance to open up five spots on the 40-man if they are moved to the 60-day DL. Kearns [1] is likely to be activated for the final month of the season.
That leaves the following eight options
- CA Luke Montz (in Harrisburg)
- SS Ian Desmond (in Syracuse)
- OF Justin Maxwell (in Syracuse)
- LHSP Ross Detwiler (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Shairon Martis (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Marco Estrada (in Syracuse)
- RHSP Luis Atilano (in Syracuse)
- LHSP Matt Chico (in Harrisburg)
Since Riggleman mentioned the goal is to protect the young pitchers, let’s start looking at roster expansion there with starters and relievers

Note: The MiLB IPs for Detwiler, Meyers, and Mandel include their college IP. Update: Per a comment, added 11 2/3IP to Detwiler’s 2008 total for the Arizona Fall League.
Lannan seems likely to pitch out the string. And I would not be surprised to see Mock and perhaps Stammen extended out through the end of 2009 (with perhaps a focus on removing them after 5IP). That means the Nationals are likely looking at replacing Balester and especially Martin in the September timeframe. It’s no sure thing that Martis, Detwiler, Atilano, or Estrada are going to have many innings to give in relief of either guy, but I would expect to see no more than three of those guys provide five innings starts in September Atilano has already seen an increase of 3oIP from 2008 to 2009 and I’m not sure if the Nationals will want to bring him up to sit in the bullpen. UPDATE: Courtesy of Mark Zuckerman at the Times, it most likely won’t be Matt Chico … “The left-hander, though, is being held to a strict limit of 90 innings this season, and general manager Mike Rizzo said he’s not likely to appear in the majors next month because of that.”
I listed the other starters from Syracuse and Harrisburg as other potential options. I strongly doubt that Meyers or Mandel are considerations for reason involving both innings and contractual option status. No need to start their clocks when they are quickly approaching innings limits. That leaves a pair of lefthanders, Horacio Ramirez and Aaron Thompson. If push comes to shove, I’d guess Ramirez would get the nod given his major league experience. He’d likely only be around for a month and then be removed fromt the 40-man in the off-season. But at this point, I’ll say the Nationals hold at adding no more than three starters (Detwiler [2], Martis [3], & update … Estrada [4]).
Relievers
I would think this is where the Nats can best protect their young arms by adding four or five relievers to shore up the bullpen. None of these guys are on the 40-man roster, but the most likely options are:
- RHP Zech Zinicola (in Syracuse)
- RHP Zack Segovia (in Syracuse)
- RHP Josh Wilkie (in Syracuse)
- RHP Clint Everts (in Syracuse)
- RHP Carlos Martinez (in Harrisburg)
- LHP Jack Spradlin (in Syracuse)
- LHP Yunior Novoa (in Syracuse)
- LHP Justin Jones (in Harrisburg)
Segovia has had prior major league experience and has experience as a starter but has seen 2009 success out of the bullpen. He offers the Nationals the option of using him as a long reliever/innings eater in September so I am going to give Segovia [5] a nod as a September call-up.
The next two guys I think get a shot are personal favorites, each for the same reason but from two distinctly different starting off points. Both have worked themselves into the Nationals plans climbing the organizational ladder over the past couple of seasons. The first is Everts. He was the Expos 2002 first round draft pick out of high school in Texas. The ceiling was high for Everts but his career was derailed by TJ surgery and it appeared his future in the major leagues had passed. But a move to the bullpen midway through 2007 and an impressive 2009 (thus far) has put him back on the prospect map. Over 54 1/3IP at three levels (Potomac, Harrisburg & Syracuse), Everts has a 1.16 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 19 walks. Always known to have a devestating curveball, Everts has excelled out of the pen. A September call-up will also likely give us an idea if he is part of the future in Washington because Everts will be a minor league free agent at the end of the 2009 season and if he is not added in September, I’m not sure he’ll be here in 2010. Count me in on the reclamation story and add Everts [6].
The other personal favorite of mine is Wilkie, an undrafted free agent signed out of George Washington in 2006. Guys like that are normally signed as organizational players to fill out the GCL or Vermont rosters and might stick around for a season or two if the a role exists on the back of Hagerstown or Potomac’s roster. But Wilkie did something unexpected, he performed … well. He has worked his way from a righthanded mop-up guy to a key part of the bullpen of the 2008 Carolina League champion Potomac Nationals where he was named Potomac’s pitcher of the year. His 2009 has seen him continue his rise through the organization with five saves between Harrisburg and Syracuse. His best pitch is his changeup and it has drawn raves at every level at which he has played. Wilkie caught my eye back in 2007 at Hagerstown and I really root for him more than just about any other player in organization. Joining Everts as a feel-good story, I’ll add Wilkie [7].
Seeing a need for another lefthander, I’d guess one of Novoa or Jones gets the call in September. Based on production in 2009, I’ll give the nod to Novoa [8].
Bats
Left from the 40-man in the minors are three guys (Montz, Desmond, & Maxwell). I think the Montz ship may have sailed given a demotion from Syracuse to Harrisburg in 2009. I don’t see him getting the third catcher call. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say Gustavo Molina [9] gets the call from Syracuse as the third catcher replacing Montz on the roster.
I think that both Maxwell [10] and Desmond [11] also get the Septmber call. Maxwell can serve as the fifth/sixth outfielder off of the bench and a defensive replacement late in games. In my opinion, I would like to see Desmond up in September and moreover given the starting shortstop role for the final month of the season. There is no better time than now to see what he can do at the major league level. I’d hope to see this paired with moving Cristian Guzman to 2B with an eye towards the off-season and 2010. The Nationals have made it clear they are interested in defense up the middle and it might be wise to see how well Desmond and Guzman can handle themselves up the middle.
Anyone else?
That puts us at 11 players added for September. The one thing I have not considered is if the Nationals were to deal someone currently on the 25-man. I’m not going to try and guess but if someone like Ronnie Belliard or Ron Villone are traded, additional spots might be available.
We have reports that 2009 draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Drew Storen are not going to be recalled so we can exclude them.
If the Nats were to add another player, I would imagine it being another bat, perhaps someone who can fill in at multiple positions. Considerations there are guys like Pete Orr, Seth Bynum, Leonard Davis, and Joel Guzman. At this point, I’m not sure any of them get the call (though Bynum has the same feel good story of undrafted to majors as Wilkie). That means my best guess of the September additions are the following eleven players:
- CA Gustavo Molina [has to be added]
- IF Ian Desmond
- OF Austin Kearns
- OF Justin Maxwell
- LHSP Ross Detwiler
- RHSP Shairon Martis
- UPDATE: RHSP Marco Estrada (not Matt Chico)
- RHRP Zack Segovia [has to be added]
- RHRP Clint Everts [has to be added]
- RHRP Josh Wilkie [has to be added]
- LHRP Yunior Novoa [has to be added]

The Nationals had their second Blogger Day at Nationals Park. We had the opportunity to talk with interim manager Jim Riggleman; Game Entertainment Staff Tom David, Dave Lundin & Jacqueline Coleman; a Q&A with players Collin Balester, Garrett Mock and Josh Willingham; a Washington Nationals Dream Foundation briefing by Chair Marla Lerner Tanenbaum; Assistant Director of Player Development Mark Scialabba (my favorite part); and nearly a half hour with Team President Stan Kasten and GM Mike Rizzo. Bob Cohn of the Washington Times documented the day. I have some notes at home from discussions with Scialabba that I will get transcribed this evening. Both Kasten and Scialabba raved about the group they were sending to this year’s Arizona Fall League but would not share any names yet.
Syracuse

Congratulations to Mike Rizzo who will reportedly today be named the full-time GM of the Washington Nationals. After a day which saw media sources report that Jerry Dipoto was the rumored choice, Ted Lerner and the management team opted to removed the “Acting” from Rizzo’s title and give him the job outright.
Good for him. He’s made the best of a very unique and often uncomfortable set of circumstances. Taking over when Bowden resigned early in spring training and operating as an interim, Rizzo cleaned up Bowden’s mess in the Dominican Republic. He struggled initially with the Nationals bullpen but settled it down over time. He added Nyjer Morgan who has been a catalyst for the Nationals both defensively and at the top of the lineup. To a large degree, he has reshaped the perception of the Nationals from the tumult of Bowden to a more professional looking organization. And he has been given the lion’s share of the credit in the handling of the Stephen Strasburg negotiations. All of this while knowing his bosses were interviewing other candidates for the job he was hoping was his.
It is good news that the Nationals have made their decision and the next order of business is to let Rizzo reshape the organization as he sees fit. I would hope he brings people on board in the player development and scouting departments that share his vision for the future of the Nationals.
There are still rumors out there about Dipoto joining the Nationals in some capacity, so it will be interesting to see if they are true and he is part of the Rizzo team moving forward.
Syracuse rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh inning, scoring six runs in their final two at-bats to defeat Buffalo 7-3 (box/gamer). 1B Daryle Ward was 1/2 with a walk and solo homer; 3B Pete Orr was 2/3 with a triple & two RBI; CF Justin Maxwell was 2/3 with a double, stolen base & run scored; 2B Seth Bynum was 1/4 with two runs scored; SS Ian Desmond was 1/4 with one RBI; and LF Norris Hopper was 1/5 with a run & RBI. LHP Ross Detwiler picked up his second win of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk over 7IP while striking out four. RHP Zack Segovia & LHP Yunior Novoa pitched the final two shutout innings, striking out a combined three. The Syracuse win combined with a Durham loss closed the gap to 1.5 games for the wild card with 22 games to play (they are 3GB of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the division).
Today: Syracuse LHP Horacio Ramirez (3-5, 5.14) & TBA at Buffalo LHPs Pat Misch (1-1, 4.64) & Ken Takahashi (0-3, 2.77) 1:05PM [first of back-to-back doubleheaders]
The Senators had to rally back three times and ended up edging Altoona 6-5 (box/gamer). 1B Chris Marrero was 1/4 with a double & three RBI; RF Ricardo Nanita was 3/4 with two runs & one RBI; SS Freddie Bynum was 2/4 with two runs; 2B Leonard Davis was 1/2 with two walks, a stolen base & run scroed; and LF Bill Rhinehart was 1/2 with one RBI. After a long rain delay, RHP Erik Arnesen surrendered five runs on nine hits over 6IP, though he did strikeout seven. RHP Carlos Martinez picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. And, RHP Drew Storen earned his fourth save in as many chances, giving up a single & walk over 1IP with one strikeout.

RHP Hassan Pena pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three; LHP Ricardo Pecina made his Potomac debut, striking out one in 1IP; and RHP Cole Kimball pitched the final inning, striking out the side. RHP Juan Jaime made the start, allowing a hit & three walks over 3IP with three strikeouts; I’m guessing he was limited by a season inning limit, something we are likely to start seeing more often over the final two plus weeks. RHP Patrick Arnold took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits.
Today: Hagerstown RHP Marcos Frias (7-4, 3.21) at Lakewood (pitcher TBA) 7:05PM

Today: Jamestown at Vermont RHP Kyle Morrison (1-2, 4.05) 7:05PM
The GCL Nationals battered the GCL Astros 12-2 (box). SS Roberto Perez made his professional debut late in the game going 0/1. LHP Josh Smoker allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks over 5 2/3IP with five strikeouts.

had a story last night that the Nationals were close to naming their permanent GM, and that the choice will be Arizona Diamondbacks executive Jerry Dipoto over interim GM Mike Rizzo and Boston Red Sox executive Jed Hoyer.
My initial feeling is the timing of this really could not be worse (assuming a decision is imminent). Rizzo was a key part of completing the biggest contract in draft history with Stephen Strasburg. Whether or not Rizzo is going to be the full-time GM moving forward, to make an announcement on the heels of the Strasburg negotiations is another example of how tone deaf this team can be in making decisions. Making the decision now (or within the next week or so) moves the story from the feel-good of Strasburg to “Why now?” of making such an important decision.
Before we can too far ahead of ourselves, Mark Zuckerman of the Washington Times posted the following which bears watching
The GM decision can’t really be made until Stan Kasten has decided whether to remain as team president or not. There haven’t been many rumors lately about Kasten’s potential departure, and certainly there’s reason to believe he’s going to stick around here a while longer. And if he stays, [a person who knows the Nationals front office well] believes, Rizzo likely gets the GM job. If Kasten were to leave, though, then whoever the new team president was would have to have the final say on a GM.
That being said, it is the Lerners responsibility to hire the person they believe can best move this franchise forward from here out. And as I have said on numerous occasions, whoever that choice is needs to be allowed to assemble their own staff from field manager to scouting to player development.

Today is the big day. Some time over the next 15 plus hours, we will find out if the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg will agree on a contract or whether the Nationals will have to settle for the 1A in 2010.
My gut feeling is that a deal will get done. Both sides have too much to lose not agreeing to a deal if the rumored numbers are to be believed (somewhere between $12 and 16 million). My personal hope is that the Nationals are willing to push the limits of their bonus to around $18-20 million. Boras’ demands of $50 million and comparisons to Daisuke Matsuzaka are silly, given that Matsuzaka was procured under a different process. But I also think using a deal from eight years ago (Mark Prior) as the baseline is also questionable, things have changed.
I understand people’s concern with that amount of money for an unproven pitcher, but the time for taking a principled stand was before Strasburg was selected. The Nationals draft and signings to date appear geared towards keeping the lion’s share of the budget available to sign Strasburg. Unlike many MLB teams, the Nationals have yet to break MLB’s slot recommended bonuses by an appreciable amount. In fact, they have made several below slot signings with all indications that they are earmarking those dollars for Strasburg. My question is if they do not sign Strasburg, where are those dollars going to go? Are they again going to make some last minute agreements with some unexpected draft picks? Or do those dollars simply go away.
At the end of today, we will know the answer but I honestly believe the Nationals cannot waste another first round selection. While the story that is being sold to us is that they’ll find value at 1A in 2010, assertions by some that the Nationals will find 90-95% of Strasburg there in 2010 are at best absurd. The expected value of the #2 player is nowhere near what the first overall player will be. Next year’s draft (if it includes Strasburg) will be Strasburg and Bryce Harper in some order at 1 & 2 and then a huge gap before the third best player. If the Nationals are hesitant to get into a large dollar negotiation with Strasburg & Boras in 2009, how can we expect them to want to wade into negotiations with Bryce Harper (& Boras) in 2010 when I believe the bonus demands are going to make the Strasburg ones look minimal? And given the fact that I doubt Strasburg would grant the Nats the right to redraft him, the Nationals are looking at no better than the third best player in 2010. And to be honest with you, I do not foresee the Nationals selecting the third best player in the draft at 1A because that player will know the Nationals are over a barrel with that pick as it is not compensated again for being unsigned. That means the Nationals will reach for a less talented player who might be more of a #10-15 but willing to take a deal to sign at 1A. Not the ideal return on a pick that is now Strasburg.
I hope (and expect) a deal to get done and if you were ask me to guess, I’ll put the final deal at $17-18 million. The bonus will be somewhere around $8-9 million with the rest in a major league deal designed to get Strasburg to arbitration and free agency as quickly as possible.
