Suns Show the Real Power

As I was pulling together the Across the Affiliates, the performance of the Hagerstown Suns this weekend really stood out to me. In their four games against the West Virginia Power, the Suns batted 419/443/754 in the process of taking three of four from the Power.

Here is a summary of who did what:

Player AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO
Justin Bloxom 20 7 10 2 1 1 10 0 3
Eleazar Cuevas 17 4 8 2 0 0 1 0 2
JR Higley 5 0 2 0 0 0 1 0 2
Destin Hood 16 4 6 2 0 1 5 0 1
Jeff Kobernus 14 5 7 2 0 0 3 1 0
Sandy Leon 13 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3
Kyle Morrison 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
Brett Newsome 18 1 8 1 2 0 4 1 5
Adrian Nieto 6 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 1
Eury Perez 14 2 6 2 0 0 2 0 1
JP Ramirez 19 6 11 0 0 2 7 2 1
Francisco Soriano 19 6 10 2 2 0 0 1 2
Steve Souza 5 1 1 1 0 0 1 0 2
TOTAL 167 36 70 14 5 4 35 5 24

Small sample size or not, a pretty impressive weekend for the Suns

Brian. What’s your thoughts on Justin Bloxom? Should I be excited about this guy and his future with the Nats. I get the same feeling about him as I did with Derek Norris.

Exciting maybe, but not sure if that’s the best comparison. Derek was 20 when he ripped up the SAL. Bloxom is 22 (I think?)

As I said on WNFF, Bloxom has been on an absolute tear this past week.

    .548/.562/.781/1.343

    4 HR’s 17 RBI’s

Bloxom has been hitting all year. I’m looking forward to Brian’s response to Ronny. Good to see Cal Bear Jeff Kobernus on track after the injuries.

Bloxom reminds me in many ways of another minor leaguer who had/has some buzz around here … Bill Rhinehart.

Rhinehart hit 295/344/490 for the Suns back in 2008 (Bloxom is currently at 333/378/507). Oddly enough, both are 11th round draft picks playing for the Suns in their first full season after being drafted.

I hope the Nats exercise more patience with Bloxom then they did with Rhinehart who I feel was promoted too quickly after his strong start in Hagerstown in 2008.

As noted, it is a small sample, impressive, nonetheless. Hagerstown is a third place team, but is competitive, nice to see.

    Sunday Afternoon in Woodbridge: http://bit.ly/briBpg

Brian’s opinion on Bloxom matches that of our Hagerstown guy’s, but unfortunately, that means that he believes he’ll hit the wall at AA.

I’m aware that my gamer above is tinged with disappointment and frustration, but as much as I’d like to see those Hagerstown bats now, it seems pretty obvious that what’s more likely to occur is for the Hagerstown starters to displace the too-old starters like Alaniz and Estrada, though two could just as easily be replaced once Lehman and Morris — both spotted yesterday tracking pitches — recover from their “illnesses.”

Sue – You should check other sources for information before you start putting quotes around words such as “illnesses”. Lehman is not allowed to throw, on doctor’s orders. He has been thoroughly checked out by two physicians, both of whom ordered him not to throw.

Thanks, but not having that information available to me (and unless you’re Pat Lehman, that’s a HIPPA violation) makes it no less true that teams will put players on the DL for reasons that aren’t clear, stated or obvious. Hence, the quotations.

BTW, in American English, the period goes inside the quotation mark.

“BTW, in American English, the period goes inside the quotation mark.”

OMG, Sue, will you get quotation mark cooties?

The “insider the quotation mark” rule is a dumb one since it occasionally forces ambiguity about whether the punctuation in question is being quoted or not. It’s a remnant of the mechanics of old printing presses. Even if it were valid, complaining about it in a comment on a sports blog is ridiculous.

I really have no idea why there is so much petty sniping in the comments of this blog, but it really makes it a pain to read sometimes. Brian keeps things very professional and everyone who gets into these petty hissy-fits should be ashamed.

Been meaning to get that off my chest for awhile.

The acronym is actually ‘HIPAA’. But who’s splitting hairs, right?

    Puntuation Gestapo, meet Acronym Police…

Baseball players routinely spit tobacco and grab themselves in front of spectators….does it REALLY matter if we mispell, hang a participle or use the incorrect acronym here on a baseball blog?

    @Greg – Touche

Of course, nobody noticed that the pedantic correction was throwaway after explaining the use of quotations to indicate sarcasm. Once again Neal Stephenson has been proven correct about subtlety.
