Brad Meyers Promoted to Harrisburg

July 6th, 2009 Brian Oliver

H/T to commenter Bill who broke the news in an earlier thread. RHP Brad Meyers apparently will be promoted to Harrisburg some time this week. I have independently confirmed this information.

No word on who he replaces in Harrisburg or who will replace him in Potomac.

Brian, what do you think Meyers ceiling is? With his size do think that his fastball might gain a few mph in the future? I really like the way he has moved through the system. I don’t think he is being rushed. Thanks.

I wonder when Derick Norris will move to Potomoc, after last night’s hit fest he’s batting .361 in his last 10 games and .314/.406/.569/.975 for the season with 17 dingers and 19 doubles.

Brian – Just guesswork on my part, but neither VanAllen or Alaniz has seemed effective at HAR, either before (or after) their injuries. I’d say it’s between those two. An outside possible would be shutting down Atilano, due to recurring blister problems.

@estuartj – With 12 errors in 77 games (not all of them behind the plate – he’s a DH as well), Norris needs to stay in HAG for a while longer, imo.

How does keeping Norris in low-a to club pitchers like baby seals help his defense?

Whatever his issue are with the errors I doubt he’ll deal with them any better in Hagerstown than in Potomac and obviously it’s time to upgrade the pitchers he’s facing.

We should put Alaniz in the pen. The big club needs help in the pen, and Alaniz doesn’t appear to have a future as a starter at the MLB level. Move him to the pen and see what he’s got when he’s not facing guys two or three times through the lineup.

As for Norris … Id love to see him on the fast track and get a promotion to Potomac. However, I don’t see a problem leaving him at Hagerstown for awhile longer. He’s getting his reps and working on his game, gaining confidence having success. Not that struggling will hinder his game, but he’s young, let him continue to grow at a lesser level. There’s no need to rush him – Ive always believed it’s better to take it slow when the guys are younger and at the lower levels, and you can rush them when their at the higher levels. A lot of development mentally and physically is going on between 18-21 and between rookie ball and high A. Once you get through those level and prove yourself, I think it’s easier to push guys through the levels.

If Norris is doing this at Potomac this time next year, Id definitely be clamoring for him to be in Harrisburg. It’s his second full season as a pro(first in full season ball), let’s let him do his thing at a nice pace. I don’t think he’s hurting by being at Hagerstown for a bit longer.

Norris now has 18 HRs and 20 dbls. Its hard to update the board fast enough. Maybe bring him up as a DH?

So I guess our prospect ranking is going to go Strasburg Norris Marrero Meyers and Espinosa.

I agree on the promotion of Norris to Potomac. I’m actually thinking he should skip potomac and go to harrisburg. he’s got the hitting thing down (trust me, I’ve watched him a ton of games) and he just needs to catch – a lot. Wherever the balls are coming from – a low A pitcher or a AA pitcher, the defense is the key. He can get defensive skills higher up. Good luck Derek….Lordy you can hit!! :o)
