Baseball America’s weekly round-up of minor league transactions helps to clear up the picture a bit more.
Released: RHP Edulin Abreu, RHP Steve Schmoll, LHP Miguel Aracena, LHP Gustavo Chacin, 3B Jose Castillo, OF Mark Gildea
Teh 24-year old Abreu split the 2008 season between Hagerstown and Potomac where he was a combined 3-2 with six saves. The 29-year old Schmoll spent the 2008 season in Harrisburg where he made 46 appearances out of the bullpen with seven saves and a 3-5 record. The 22-year old Aracena made ten relief appearances for the GCL Nats in 2008. The 28-year olds Chacin & Castillo move on after battling for a spot on the Nats 25-man this spring. And Baseball America had this to say about Gildea
Gildea, an ’07 ninth-round pick from Florida State, endured a miserable season with low Class A Hagerstown last year. The switch-hitter batted .171/.296/.253 with 102 strikeouts—but with 49 walks—in 293 at-bats.
No real surprises here.

It is a sorry sight to see someone with as much motivation and drive as Steve Schmoll be released from the Nationals. Steve is a DC local that would bring a large fan-base to DC games. The Nationals are NOT smart for releasing him.
