I agree about Frias, looks like 100 IP is his limit. Quite a year for him, 2.99 era with 84K:22BB as a 20 year old. Do you think he makes top 15 or so, Brian?

cj – Very possible. With the number of guys no longer rookies, he has a chance

Is Willems nursing an injury? He was a 2007 NY Penn league mid season All Star selection in 2007 and is now struggling in the GCL. Smoker is giving up more than a hit per inning in the GCL after making his pro debut with Vermont in 2007. Is he fully recuperated?

What should me make of Montz playing first? Has he lost the starting CA role to Rooney?
#5 by Brian Oliver - August 6th, 2009 at 08:35
That would be my assumption. Seems they want Rooney to get the PT at catcher

Today is an opportunity for a rare Nats/P-Nats doubleheader. I’m planning on seeing if the big club can stretch it out to 5 games and then catching Holder in his second Potomac start.
I was in Frederick last night. Burgess’ first blast was a bomb. He really like Harry Grove stadium or Frederick pitching, I guess. On the other hand, Atwood topped out at 89 early and by the second time through the lineup, Frederick’s hitters were sitting on his fastball.
Bummed that I’ve seen Potomac twice post-Storen and missed him both times. Hopefully, Holder can give us a save situation.
Is Montz in danger of release at this point with his lack of hitting and the progress of the other catchers?

dd: Smoker and Willems are both coming back from injury, Smoker is more serious.
Next year is gonna be a big one for them, both of them will be 21 and need to get on the right track

Brian,
I attended the P-Nats game last night. Nice to see that Burgess has power to all fields as one of his mammoth homeruns was an opposite field shot. Marrero’s “single” was a rocket off the center field wall as he was thrown out at second. He did also make a nice backhanded short hop at first on a bad throw from the third basemen.
One question: Why would they bring in Suess to pitch only down by four; is the bullpen that over worked? He was only pitching in the low sixties according to the scoreboard.
#9 by Brian Oliver - August 6th, 2009 at 09:44
My guess about the reason Suess came in is that they typically have the relievers on some sort of pitching rotation of their own. Certain guys will always work every third day (or some timeline) and the P-Nats didn’t want ot disrupt the routines too much.

Suess is a knuckleballer, thats why his speed is so low.

I’m starting to love me some Francisco Soriano in Vermont.

A quick scan shows Morrison, Morris, Lehman, Rosenbaum, Smoker, McGeary, Clegg, Milone, Jaime, Jenkins, Frias, Engles, Meyers, Kown, Mandel, Arnesen, Holder, and Guzman all doing well. Add to that Chico, Mock, Demny, Detwiler, Martin, Olsen, Stammen, Balester, Zimmermann, Lannan, Estrada, Willems, Martis, Thompson, Estrada, and hopefully Strasburg, is it safe to say we have some SP depth in the org now?

Is it me, or does Ozvaldo Rodriguez have a lot of similarities to Tyler Clippard? Former starter turned reliever, righty, and adjusting well, ERA under 2.50? I’m not certain of their pithces, but I think both are fast ballers w/o much in the way change ups.

expo_ram: I think there is reason for guarded optimism at this point (I’m with you, in I like what I see), but a lot of the pitchers here have a very small sample-size. Come October, the orginazation should have a better view (and feel) of what is actually on-hand for 2010.

Mark: Osvaldo reportedly had a wicked curve as an “out-pitch” when he was signed by the LAD, but has apparently been searching for another off-speed pitch ever since he punked his elbow in 2005.
Clippard, to my limited recollection, has never been injured, but has always lacked the third “plus” pitch that usually sets SP apart from the RP on a roster.
