Congratulations to Jorge Padilla! His chance at the majors was a long time coming. If he didn’t deserve it after this kind of career year, I am not sure he ever could.

I was at the P-nats/Keys game last night. Zimmerman took a pretty wicked shot off the back of the L leg. The ball was hit back up the middle and he was completing his normal follow through from the pitch. He was immediately pulled. He didn’t limp off the field at all nor was helped in any fashion. I’m no doctor, but he’ll have a nice bruise and maybe some hamstring soreness….advil and ice will do wonders. :o)

OK, for those of you trying to figure out Steven Strasburg’s value, here is the link to his valuation using a financial market model-
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204313604574330522719994590.html
It states his “risk-adjusted value” at $11 million.

Jorge! Guess 11 is the charm, finally making the Bigs in your 11th season of pro ball. Way to go! Congrats, you deserve it.

Souza, Maxwell, McGeary getting better….
Williams needs to be dumped from SYR.

Maybe Padilla should replace the other AAAA player JD Martin (otherwise known as beach ball Martin).

Sign the ‘Nats Sign Stephen Strasburg’ petition that is going around (note: I think he will get signed but it’s still fun to see Nats fans are interested in what’s going on).

Nathan Karns has great numbers in the TCL. He’s 4-0 in 5 starts(six appearances). In 30 innings he has 47Ks and 17 BBs. His ERA is 1.20 and his BAA is .126. The walk rate is a little high, but overall the numbers look great to me. On July 25 he had a 15 K game. His K/9 is the highest of the top 5 leaders in Ks.

According to the box score, Ian Desmond actually had 3 errors last night. Im afraid its going to be his defense that ends up stopping him from making the jump to DC. Anyone know whats going on with his defense this year?
#13 by RT - August 5th, 2009 at 13:25
I really hope we get Karns signed. Seems like he is a bit of a high risk/ high reward guy but I love taking shots on guys with high ceilings. We seemed to make a number of “safe” picks this year, hopefully we can sign Karns to go along with them.

This just posted on the BA site in an article discussing the number of unsigned #1’s.
“San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall pick by the Nationals, and agent Scott Boras reportedly want a $50 million contract. While Strasburg would command that on the open market, he’ll have to settle for smashing Mark Prior’s draft-record $10.5 million deal from 2001. Strasburg and Washington will meet somewhere in the middle, though Boras may yet unveil some gambit designed to make his client a free agent.”

For what this is worth, the announcers for SYR mentioned during a couple of games that Desmond appeared to be trying to turn the double play and lost his concentration. One comment is that “he’s making the difficult plays but booting the routine ones.” I’m not sure Desmond can stick at short in the bigs.

That same comment has been following him since I started following the farm system in 2005.

Brian-
Any chance Desmond is a CF’er in the future, whether with the Nationals or somewhere else? He seems to be an Outfielder playing SS…

#19 by SpringfieldFan - August 5th, 2009 at 18:53

Brian…any truth to the PED rumor?
#21 by Wallyball - August 6th, 2009 at 07:59
What ped rumor?
#22 by Brian Oliver - August 6th, 2009 at 08:01
I was going to ask the same question
#23 by Wallyball - August 6th, 2009 at 08:18
Brian – off topic, but it has surprised me how little coverage the Strasburg negotiations have had. Have you heard anything off line?
#24 by Brian Oliver - August 6th, 2009 at 08:19
Wally – Not a word. I figure it will heat up this weekend.
#25 by Wallyball - August 6th, 2009 at 08:23
I guess that it is time to buckle up. Don’t really want to contemplate not signing him
#26 by John - August 6th, 2009 at 09:21
Brian is using PEDs. There’s no way he could do all he does without them :)
