I wouldn’t be suprised to see the Nationals FO start moving players around shortly after this years’ draft. From a “bottom-up” look, here’s my take…

HAR - Norris (C), then maybe Moore (1B), & Lombardozzi (2B) look like possibles at POT; Lozada (SS) could get blocked by Espinosa for 2009; From the pitching staff, Engles and O. Rodriguez, then maybe Peacock &/or Frias could move up.

POT - Rooney (C) could catch a bump-up, along with Marrero (1B). Severino & Everts (both RP) could be moved up before the seasons’ over.

HAR - Losing Desmond (SS) to an early injury didn’t help this squad. Most of them are treading water, at best at AA. Solano (C), Rhinehart (1B), & the current OF rotation (Davis, Daniel, Baez, Lowrance) should hang on to the end of the year, but the rest of the hitters look like fishbait, if a replacement is available, imo. From the pitching side, Arnesen continues to perform well since his promotion from POT, and Zinicola has pitched well in the ‘pen.

SYR - From the hitters’ side, this is a 4A holding pen in case there is a catastrophic position injury in WSH; some September possibles, but not much else. From the pitching side of things, Clippard is making a case for a look in a MR role - some of the others might get a September look as well, but nothing long-term at this point.

Over the last 20 innings Graham Hicks has allowed 3 runs, 16 so, and 4 walks. He will go to Potomac on the 10th for a bullpen and then go to Hagerstown for a start on the 13th before being assigned to Vermont.

I understand the wish to move the players, but it would be nice if the Nationals finally waited until after their league allstar games to move the players. It is a very motivational experience to be part of na allstar game and our developing players who earn the right to go to these games should get to go. I say this because for the past several years they Nationals PD move the players just before the alstar games.

If Bally keeps up his recent form, he will get another shot with the big club before season’s end.

What’s Graham Hick fastball and did he get any bigger since he was drafted?

  8. #8 by Jeff E. - June 3rd, 2009 at 23:25

Firing St. Claire was a big mistake. he was the scapegoat for a collective irony. We hear the word patience from upstairs..but…

Graham turned 19 in Feb. and has added 16 lb’s. to his 6′5″ frame putting him at 176. He stays 88-90 with his fast ball but and I heard a coach say he had a plus major league slider and a major league change up. The best thing about his fastball is his command and ability to pitch down in the zone. He also has the ability to use his other pitches at any point in the count. Graham loves being part of the Nat’s and is looking forward to getting to Vermont.

So would you say he’s a future top of the rotation starter(1,2), and what pitcher in MLB would you compare him too as far as talent goes.

  11. #11 by Danny - June 4th, 2009 at 08:16

If Graham continues to work hard and do all the things required to improve each time he takes the field he could develope into a top rotation pitcher but he has a ways to go. A lot of people tells me he is a carbon copy of Andrew Miller with the Florida Marlins.

I would hope fervently the Nats do NOT move a lot of players up, especially the younger ones. Marrero, Burgess, Norris, all need to have success over a full year at their levels.

Some clamored for Espinosa to be promoted after his hot start - only now is he starting to show signs of improvement after a wicked cold spell. Having a full year will give them confidence and cockiness that won’t come if suddenly jerked up a level to where they have difficulty performing.

Norris is 20, so next year Potomac @ 21, Harrisburg @22, Nats @23. Marrero will be 21 in July, Espinosa is 21.

The guys we SHOULD promote are ones facing age issues (too old for their level), like Osvaldo Rodriguez (25 in H-town), Severino (24 - Potomac) and Everts (24 - Potomac).

And Vermont is looking forward to having Graham!

  15. #15 by pm - June 4th, 2009 at 12:25

There is no reason for Norris to stay at Hagerstown. It’s obvious he has nothing to gain there because he is dominating that level. You can’t compare him to Marrero or Burgess because those two are not dominating at their levels and need more time.

Freda, you’re our eyes and ears there in Vermont on Graham and the rest. Keep us posted.
