Syracuse rallied to tie their game with Indianapolis at 5-5 before LHP Atahualpa Severino gave up two runs in the top of the ninth in a 7-5 loss, their eighth straight (box/gamer). RHP Jason Marquis made a rehab start, struggling out of the gate. From the Post-Standard:
The first five hitters Indianapolis sent to the plate reached base against Marquis. Brandon Moss, the Indians cleanup hitter, clubbed a grand slam to put Indianapolis ahead 4-0 before Marquis had recorded an out.
Then the next Indianapolis hitter, Jeff Clement, ripped a line drive off Marquis’ left ankle. Marquis crumpled to the ground. Syracuse trainer Beth Jarrett rushed out to check on Marquis.
Marquis got up and promptly retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced
Marquis finished with four runs on four hits and a walk over 5IP with seven strikeouts. 3B Pete Orr was 2/4 with a triple & run scored; 2B Chase Lambin was 2/4 with a two-run homer; and LF Leonard Davis was 1/3 with a two-run homer.

A clean sweep. Every team in the system that played lost.
Interested to see how Tyler Hanks does today, he is easily my prediction for the 2010 steal of the draft. Got to love find a mid 90′s fast ball with good location in the 17th round of the draft. Has pitched great so far.
Brian. How come you didn’t warn us about the David Freitas Hurricane that was coming? This kid(as far as hitting goes) is Derek Norris pt2.
“Then the next Indianapolis hitter, Jeff Clement, ripped a line drive off Marquis’ left ankle. Marquis crumpled to the ground. Syracuse trainer Beth Jarrett rushed out to check on Marquis. Marquis got up and promptly retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced.”
So the secret is out. On the day Marquis pitches, let him toss BP (without the little cage to protect him) and have someone slap one off his ankle…
Sportsouth ATL trivia question this afternoon was: name the last LHP to win 15 games for MTL/WASH….Jeff Fassero…Joe Simpson without flinching brought up the Cliff Lee deal to CLE…lets hope that Detwiler and Smoker join that trvia question answer.
Ladson reporting that Capps was traded for Ramos of the Twins
And Ramos was educated by ex-po pitching coach, Bobby Cuellar @ ROCH. Rizzo loves to stockpile LHPs for pens…
Hope that means the trade with the Sox for Dunn isn’t happening. If it had to be done, Hudson and Flowers made the most sense. Now that Flowers doesn’t fit, the trade makes less sense. Im not convinced on Morel being capable of playing second base. Danks … We have plenty of outfielders that project just as well, if not better, than he does.
Viciedo and Hudson, hopefully, would be the only deal there. Id still hold on to Dunn.
Glad to see we got something solid for Capps. In comparison to Flowers, at least Ramos is still 22 in his first taste of AAA. He may not have as much power, but his defensive numbers are better, and there appears to be more upside. If we’re judging by rankings, it looks like Ramos was ranked higher than Flowers entering the year.
I wouldn’t have minded keeping Capps, but Storen is our future as a closer. Might as well get him situated in that role. It’ll be nice to see what Balester, Wilkie or even Stammen if he’s reassigned to the pen, show their stuff this year to get situation for next year.
Brian is going to miss it … there is every chance they call up Wilkie … he was doing way better than Balester who almost killed two guys with his wildness …
If the we can’t sign him and the Rays are the darkhorse for Dunn, would love to pick up Hellickson (moreso than Hudson) and a low level bat.
Id almost do Hellickson straight up. He is a guy that will be a #2 on a good team. Could be a #1 on an average, or lesser team. Slotting him here, he probably goes #2 behind Strasburg, with Zimmermann at #3. Adding a talent like him would be great. He’s one of the studs I referred to before about not moving Dunn unless we get one.
My question with Ramos is … what does that do with other prospects? Does this allow the team to move Norris off of the catcher position, and speed up his ascent to the bigs? Since many think he isn’t a big league defensive catcher, why not begin the move at the start of next season? If we can re-sign Dunn, then do we move Marrero to the outfield? Let him start the season in LF with Syracuse. If he plays well, Willingham should be a solid commodity at the deadline, to open up room for Marrero. He can’t be any worse defensively than Dunn was when he roamed the OF. That clears the 1B spot of the future out for Norris. At some point during year 2 or 3 of Dunn’s extension(assuming, under this scenario) Dunn could be moved to clear out room for Norris, and bring in whatever talent upgrade we need elsewhere.
I know Im jumping the gun with all the thoughts. I do hope Ramos spends the rest of the year at Syracuse, with a September callup. He needs more AB’s in the minor leagues, but getting some experience with Pudge will have its benefits as well.
Thursday’s News & Notes: http://bit.ly/bU8My6
@RD – Marrero was tried in LF in ’07 and was very much indeed worse than Dunn. If Dunn is to be traded, I’d be looking to package Marrero with him to sweeten the deal and get more players in return.
It appears Ramos hasn’t been to the AFL yet I’d be all for sending him there this summer to work on his plate discipline against some of the best pitching in the minors.
Good, Bad, Interesting… Vol. 16: http://bit.ly/aVZfSX
Sue, I know it was tried before but he was a high school infielder and wasn’t given a lot of time to improve. Wasn’t that at the time when he added quite a bit of weight as well? Just saying maybe it is worth at least considering. If he is used in a package elsewhere I suppose that’s fine if Norris has shifted to first. At this point though, Marrero’s real close to the show and we need to find a place for him. Just kind of thinking out loud with all of this …
@RD – Perhaps, but they gave him 92 games out there before accepting the obvious. I simply remember a kid that looked helplessly out of position and had trouble judging the ball coming off the bat. I’m not sure why there’s such a rush to move Chris off 1B.

The White Sox traded Dan Hudson to Arizona for Edwin Jackson, which take Hudson off the table for the Nats. Could be that the White Sox made the trade because the Nats want Jackson (not sure why as he will make $8 million+ last year and has been erratic as a starter other than the 1st half of the 2009 season).
If available, i would much rather get one of the Rays young arms (Davis or Hellickson) as they will make very little over the next few year, will stay under Nats control for many years (Jackson will be a FA in 2012), and have big upsides.
You would know more about how he actually looked as I never saw him play there. I just find it hard to believe its so difficult. I played ball through college, so I’m familiar with the game and what it takes. I know not just anyone can play the OF but Marrero is no less qualified athletically than a lot of other guys who have played the spot.
Like I said, I’m just throwing ideas out there.
Looks like Edwin Jackson for Dan Hudson and the #8 Sox prospect. Pretty similar to what was offered for Dunn. Dunn should fetch a lot more. Some rumors about Jackson being shipped here in a deal for Dunn. Not entirely against it because at least Jackson has a good arm but still don’t get the sense in the move. It better be Viciedo in addition to Jackson, maybe another kid. Here’s to hoping for Hellickson …
Guzman gone? There is a baseball god!
Anyone know who the Nats get in return from the Rangers?
Atahualpo Severino was called up, so hold off on Wilkie-mas. according to Zuckerman http://natsinsider.blogspot.com/2010/07/dunn-trade-talk.html#more
Pitcher Ryan Tatsusko is one of the pitchers they got for Guzman. He is the author of a minor league journal called “the Backfield Report”
Tanner Roark is the other guy
I did this about a week ago at the end of a thread, so if you’ve seen this already I apologize. Been following a star moving through the system — Eury Perez. He was easy to miss earlier this year, but his numbers are amazing. GCL player of the year 2009. Skips Vermont and goes straight to Hagerstown where he takes a little time to adjust, understandably. Here are his numbers as of Friday night — April – .542 OPS May – .593 June – .707 July – .918 AND 40 steals so far this season. He just turned 20 in May! Great numbers.

Tatusko and Roark appear to be fringe prospects that throw strikes and work low in the zone. My gut says that they’re projects to learn and/or refine the sinker.
