Washington’s tidy loss yesterday 11-5 eliminated Baltimore, but Pittsburgh kept pace by itself losing to the Dodgers at home. So the Tragic Number is reduced to 3. Note that Washington, by virtue of having a worse record last year than any of its “competitors” in this race, holds all tiebreakers in the case of both us and Pittsburgh finishing with the same record.
Here’s the standings of the 5 worst teams in the majors right now.
| team | W | L | pct | ga | tragic | left | last10 | streak |
| Washington | 52 | 102 | 0.338 | - | - | 8 | 2-8 | L-2 |
| Pittsburgh | 57 | 96 | 0.373 | 5.5 | 3 | 9 | 2-8 | W-1 |
| Baltimore | 60 | 94 | 0.39 | elim | 0 | 8 | 1-9 | L-9 |
| Cleveland | 63 | 91 | 0.409 | elim | 0 | 8 | 2-8 | W-2 |
| Kansas City | 63 | 92 | 0.406 | elim | 0 | 7 | 5-5 | L-4 |
Remaining games:
Washington: 8 games left. 1 home vs Atlanta, 3 home vs NYMets, 4 away to Atlanta
Pittsburgh: 9 games left 2 home vs LA Dodgers, 4 away to Chicago Cubs, 3 away to Cincinnati

Nats lose in 10, Pirates score 4 in bottom of 9th to shock the Dodgers. Tragic number now 1.

Clever Sue, clever. The game yesterday was entertaining and one we should have won. If Harriss is brought in the miscues of the 10th would not have occurred. Thanks Todd. I thought we would be 10 days on our own.
