Pittsburgh may make a run at Crow, but Neal Huntington seems to prefer bats in top ten from his days with Cleveland and last season.
Donovan Tate or Dustin Ackley are just as likely if not more likely for the Buccos.

I'd like a Scheppers pick - little to no leverage left and if he truely is back in early 08 form then he would be a steal at pick #10.

Think about it - getting 2/5 of your MLB rotation in one day.

I'd think that getting a bat in free agency, as a stop gap, is better than a pitcher in free agency. I'd hope they go for arms 1 & 10. We do have 50 in the 2nd for a bat. Like Dick said it's a nice guess but I'm not Rizzo.

WWRD
What will Rizzo Do?

Assuming Scheppers continues to hold up, I would be happy with Strasburg and one of Scheppers, Leake or Poythress. I would not grab the HS arm at 10.

mfeld - My gut tells me the Nats are going to draft BPAWSFS.

Best Player Available Who Signs For Slot.

A bat would be nice but there is something to adding an arm like Leake who seems likely to sign for slot. Scheppers, I'm not sure where his bonus demands fall but given his draft re-entry status, I'd imagine he's at least open to it.

Brian,

With the mediocrity of the Nationals starting pitching and the rough performance so far by the bullpen (and that's putting it kindly), do you feel the Nats are more likely to take two pitchers now in the 1st round?

Personally I was all in favor of the Nats drafting best bat available at #10, but now, I just don't know. I'm leaning more towards need (a pitcher), especially since our minor league pitching does seem to be as deep as we thought it was a year ago with the struggles of our top pitching prospects (Detwiler, Smoker, Ballester, Williams, etc.).

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Basil - My guess is that the players grabbed in the 1st round will not suffer any bonus effects driven by a poor economy. I'd imagine that we might see fewer above slot later deals (6th round and later).

Brian, w/r/t the Tigers, I've seen lots of articles saying that their gate will be particularly hurt by the current economic climate. Any thinking that this will affect how aggressively they pick at No. 9?

Not sold on Miller but Scheppers, Poythress and Leake would be a surprising trove of riches to choose from at #10. Shoulder injuries still scare me regarding Scheppers.

Just looking at numbers, I still think Leake is a no-brainer. Leake has slightly better WHIP than Strasburg because he gives up slightly fewer hits with almost the same number of walks. Leake has a better ERA, if that is even worth anything. The only difference between the two is Leake only strikes out just under 10 batters per 9 innings. Great athlete, has been a workhorse. I believe he leads Division I in innings pitched. I don't see why he wouldn't be signable either. He'll still be "undersized" next year! Probably won't add 5 miles velocity this summer, either.

But, 1) I've never seen him pitch and 2) I'm not Mike Rizzo so my opinion doesn't count.

Baseball America just released its latest NCAA College Baseball Tourney Field, and that projection had SD State in the tourney as a 3 seed in the Fullerton sub-regional. For the baseball field of 64, there are 16 sub-regionals with 4 teams in each. A 3 seed means that SD State could still fail to make the NCAAs if they stumble to the finish.
