Nationals Rule 5 Eligibles

The Nationals have 39 players on their 40-man roster meaning that they can select one player in this December’s Rule 5 draft (background on the draft here).

Here are some of the Nationals minor leaguers eligible for the Rule 5 draft:

  • RHP Edulin Abreu
  • RHP Matt Avery (acquired this off-season)
  • OF Edgardo Baez
  • IF Ofilio Castro
  • LHP Tim Bittner
  • OF Dee Brown
  • RHP Bobby Brownlie
  • IF Seth Bynum
  • OF Mike Daniel
  • RHP Terrence Engles
  • RHP Clint Everts
  • RHP Johan Figuereo
  • OF Reggie Fitzpatrick (restricted list)
  • RHP Ryan Harrison
  • CA Javi Herrera
  • CA Devin Ivany
  • LHP Justin Jones
  • RHP Andrew Kown
  • OF Ryan Langerhans
  • RHP Jamie Lehman
  • OF Marvin Lowrance
  • RHP Chris Lugo
  • RHP Carlos Martinez
  • IF Michael Martinez
  • RHP Alexis Morales
  • LHP Yunior Novoa
  • IF Pete Orr
  • 1B Tim Pahuta
  • CA Brian Peacock
  • RHP Carlos Peralta
  • RHP Josh Perrault
  • CA John Poppert (restricted list)
  • RHP Osvaldo Rodriguez
  • IF Matt Rogelstad
  • RHP Steve Schmoll
  • RHP Zack Segovia
  • LHP Atahaulpa Severino
  • LHP Jack Spradlin
  • RHP Craig Stammen
  • OF Jesus Valdez
  • RHP Ryan Wagner (heard he re-signed … trying to confirm)
  • 1B Matt Whitney
  • IF Marcos Yepez
  • 1B Dmitri Young

Realistically, maybe someone takes a shot on LHPs Novoa or Severino, or someone sees a 25-man spot worth grabbing Langerhans or Orr. Aside from that, I’m not sure the Nationals lose anyone.

Is there a site where this is compiled and maintained or did you figure this yourself?

  2. #2 by Steven on Capitol Hill - November 22nd, 2008 at 16:43

Seems like Lowrance may attract some interest. I thought Langerhans was an FA. Other than that, maaaaaaybe Ivany? Anyone else?

  3. #3 by Andrew Stebbins - November 22nd, 2008 at 16:51

Lots of good names available from other orgs., hopefully our Nats can free up some room on the roster because I’d like to see them make more than one selection.

  4. #4 by Steven on Capitol Hill - November 22nd, 2008 at 16:53

I just googled it and I somehow missed that Langerhans resigned 11/11. Must have been my veterans day bender.

I bet he’ll be grabbed. Seems odd that he’s not protected.

  5. #5 by Brian Oliver - November 22nd, 2008 at 16:57

SoCH – Compiled myself. For some reason, MLB is really protective of this stuff. No idea why since it can be relatively easily figured out. Seems to me that information really isn’t that proprietary.

Lowrance could attract interest but I’m not so sure he’s worth a 25-man spot.

  6. #6 by JayB - November 22nd, 2008 at 17:01

I bet they can get a few players off other teams better than Casto and Montz…..seems like these two should have been dropped off the 40 man and then draft 3 rule 5 guys in hopes of keeping 2 on the 25 man. I am sure there will be better options than Pena, Casto, Montz, for the 25 man roster by then end off Spring Training. Langerhans is a nice 5th OF for the Red Sox maybe….no use for this team and not worth anything in trade clearly….he also passed waivers already this fall.

Brian, How many players can other teams take from one organization? I know there are rule about how this Draft is run.

  8. #8 by Terry Byrom - November 22nd, 2008 at 20:30

    Brian,

You’d think I would know this but I don’t. Please again explain the difference between the MLB and MiLB rule 5 drafts!?!? And the list here, this is the list for the MLB rule 5!?!?

  9. #9 by Terry Byrom - November 22nd, 2008 at 20:34

As I wait for my answer…

Marvin Lowrance, for example, since he’s never played above AA is eligible to be taken by someone for $12,000 in the AAA portion of the draft, is that correct?

    Thanks Brian…

  10. #10 by Willy - November 22nd, 2008 at 20:35

Brian, great info, as usual. Are you going to put something out about potential Rule 5 acquisitions by the Nats? I have heard some names, but would be interested to hear your opinion. Donald Veal was the most recognizable name that I have heard available.

  11. #11 by John IV - November 22nd, 2008 at 22:12

    Mike Daniel is gone, imo.

  12. #12 by steve - November 23rd, 2008 at 09:47

Mike Daniel is he gone? I hope not this kid has something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. #13 by estuartj - November 23rd, 2008 at 10:16

Can we can move guys off the 40 man to make room up to the draft? We can’t send anyone to AAA after the rosters are set, correct?

I think we need at least 3 slots based on previous drafts and our draft position this year.

  14. #14 by expo_ram - November 23rd, 2008 at 10:28

We better not tie up 3 spots (or even 2 really) on the 25 man with Rule V. We won’t have room once we acquire Tex, Hudson, and a couple more good pitchers! :^)

  15. #15 by Suns Fan - November 23rd, 2008 at 10:45

I could see somebody taking Severino. He has some long-term potential, and would be serviceable in a mop-up role next year in the big leagues.

From “At last, a quick explanation of the Rule 5 draft” By Alan Schwarz, BA ~2002

Teams must file their 40-man rosters by Nov. 20, and only those not at the full allotment of 40 may select players.

Teams select in reverse order of that season’s finish, with the American and National leagues alternating the No. 1 pick from year to year. [Brian - Are the Nats first this year?]

Since 1950, selections have included a low of three players in 1974 and a high of 24 in 1994. The selection price was increased in 1985 to $50,000 from $25,000.

There are Triple-A and Double-A segments of the Rule 5 draft, with price tags of $12,000 and $4,000 respectively. Minor league players not protected on the reserve lists at the Double-A and Class A levels are subject to selection, but almost no future big leaguers emerge from this process. It’s basically a tool for major league teams to fill out affiliates rather than obtain talent.

Looking at that last item, I would think that some of the Lowrance types would be left unprotected in the AAA phase and could be plucked — like Brian wrote earlier, MLB is opaque when it comes to the Rule 5 draft, and BA is no better when it comes to explaining the minor-league phase. Best I could come up with (from MLN Sports) was that “teams with more than 38 confirmed on the roster were ineligible,” for the AAA draft.

  17. #17 by PANatsFan - November 23rd, 2008 at 19:24

Didn’t Osvaldo Rodriguez just come up from the DSL after taking a few years off baseball? Is that why he’s Rule V eligible? Or am I totally confused?

  18. #18 by Carol - November 23rd, 2008 at 21:23

What’s the deal with Fitzpatrick and Poppert? I thought Poppert quit or something.

  19. #19 by Steveo - November 23rd, 2008 at 23:25

Sue: I don’t know if this is fulley true but I would imagine that the Nats do pick first. That Article from BA was written before the last CBA, during a time in which the Rule IV draft (High school/college) alternated the No.1 pick between the leagues. The new CBA changed that for the Rule IV draft so I’d find it a bit weird if they didn’t change it for the Rule V draft as well.

  20. #20 by Steveo - November 23rd, 2008 at 23:31

As for who we might lose I think Ivany is a possiblity just b/c back up catchers are such a premium and there is not a high expectation for them having big numbers. Everts is someone else I could see taken and while that might not be a big blow he was once a top propsect so some team may take a shot on him.

  21. #21 by Andrew Stebbins - November 24th, 2008 at 00:13

Steveo, yup, Nats have pick 1.

  22. #22 by Sue Dinem - November 24th, 2008 at 10:44

Thanks, gents. I would add Stammen and Baez to that list of “maybes,” especially for the AAA phase. I agree about Everts, who would be a great project for a team looking to steer him toward being a Paul Byrd-type of pitcher. Since I first saw him in ‘06, he’s thrown much more breaking stuff, and he seemed to be more effective using the fastball in reverse.

  23. #23 by Pilchard - November 24th, 2008 at 11:43

Would guess that Mike Daniel would have the best chance of being taken in the MLB portion of that Rule V draft. That said, would not think that another MLB team would be willing to keep him on a MLB roster for season, but we shall see.

Wonder what the Nats see in Cory Kasto to think that he is worth protecting over having another Rule V pick available. IIRC, the Nats will pick first in this draft, and you would think that the Nats would want to have flexibility of drafting 2 players. Would love for Kasto to prove me wrong, but his upside tops out as a below average 5th OFer/utility type of player.

  24. #24 by Willy - November 24th, 2008 at 12:22

CamdenDepot did a quick take on some available Rule 5 players. Morlan sounds interesting to me, maybe Veal.

  25. #25 by Stats Freak - November 24th, 2008 at 14:13

I would guess that there won’t be anyone taken in the major league portion. I could see some guys go in the minor league portion, but we have no idea about who is protected in that and who isn’t. And maybe Brian knows about whether it’s the same protection list or not!?!? I’m not sure.

As much as we all like and follow these players, I’m not sure there’s anyone on that list that any team would think is close enough to the bigs to be kept.

  26. #26 by expo_ram - November 24th, 2008 at 18:17

My money is on Veal if they want a LHRP or Morlan if they want a RHRP.

Add one to Shell, Rivera, Hanrahan, Colome, and a long reliever (Mock, Martis, Chico, Bergmann, Estrada, Clippard). Probably still need to get a FA RP.

Sans an acquisition, are our starters going to be Lannan, Redding, Olsen, Balester, and Hill (if healthy)?

Are we happy with that staff?

  27. #27 by BinM - November 24th, 2008 at 19:36

StatsFreak: The Nats’ might lose some players at the AAA / AA level (Daniel, Lowrance, maybe Perrault and/or Spradlin), but I’d be suprised if anyone on this list is a ML claim. I doubt that the braintrust will claim anyone in this years’ rule V – they found their “pearl” with Flores in 2006. I also believe the team is keeping a roster spot open for a FA signing or trade(s) as they move through the Hot Stove / Winter Meetings toward Spring Training.

  28. #28 by BinM - November 24th, 2008 at 19:53

expo_ran: I’d LOVE to see the big club acquire a bona-fide #1 starter that could show the youngsters how to win games without their best stuff, but don’t believe that the Kasten/Lerner combo will make that commitment at this point in time. Lowe is probably the only FA in the Nats’ contract range (3-yr,$42M?) that “brings the goods”, but I think he’d rather stay with a contender (and he’s a Boras client). I’m hoping for an off-season trade – otherwise, it’s Olsen / Redding / Lannan / Balester / Hill-Bergmann-Clippard until the kiddie corps starts getting the callups.

  29. #29 by BinM - November 24th, 2008 at 20:07

expo_ran: Also, you forgot Hinckley (LHP) on your list of relievers. From the currently available list, I’d guess on a bullpen of LR)Estrada/Atilano/Mock/Martis (pick 1 or 2), MR)O’Conner/Shell/Bergmann (pick 2), SU) Rivera & Hinckley, and CL) Hanrahan. I don’t think they’ll renew Colome, and Chico will still be on rehab to start the 2009 season (although I think he’d make an excellent LR).

  30. #30 by expo_ram - November 25th, 2008 at 15:11

BinM: you are right, I forgot about Hinckley. Hinckley, Veal/Morlan, Shell, Rivera, Hanrahan, and Colome (I think they will offer – fastball too good, and when he’s on, he is ON) sounds like a good pen.

SP should be Lannan, Olsen, Redding, Balester, Hill/FA/trade. If we can sign Tex or Hudson, and if Hill is healthy, it frees up a prospect or 3 to package to get a decent SP.

AAA starters should be (too) deep with Martis, Mock, Estrada, Bergmann, Zimmermann, Clippard, O’Connor, Chico, Alaniz, maybe Detwiler, AND you know they will pick up some potential guys to try to find that diamond in the rough.

  31. #31 by BinM - November 25th, 2008 at 19:11

expo_ran: Your minor-league pitching can NEVER be too deep. I’m still guessing, but coming out of ST, here’s the starting staffs… Mock, Bergmann & Estrada stay with the big club, probably in the BP; Hill & Chico start the year on the 60-DL. AAA – Clippard, Martis, O’Conner, J.Zimmermann, Stammen. AA – Alaniz, VanAllen, Detwiler, ??? A+ – Willems, O.Rodriguez, Meyers, ??? A – Atwood, Peacock, Arnold, ??? A- – McGeary, ???. A look at last years’ rosters would help fill out most of the question marks.

  32. #32 by Andrew Stebbins - November 25th, 2008 at 19:50

I like BinM’s post. Only thing I might not agree with is Detwiler in Harrisburg. Smoker will probably join Atwood, Peacock, and Arnold in Hagerstown.

  33. #33 by BinM - November 25th, 2008 at 20:43

Andrew: Do you think Detwiler starts lower (back in PAT), and Smoker begins the year in HAG?

  34. #34 by BinM - November 25th, 2008 at 21:57

    Here’s the Nationals’ MiL starting staffs (upon further review). SYR/AAA – Clippard, Martis, O’Conner^, J.Zimmermann, Stammen. HAR/AA – Alaniz, VanAllen^, Kimball, J.Jones^, Crawford. POT/A+ – Willems, O.Rodriguez, Meyers, Detwiler^, Mandel, Arnesen. HAG/A – Atwood, Peacock, Arnold, Milone^, Pecina^, Engles. VT/A- – Smoker^, Hicks^, McCoy^, Demny, Frias. GCL/R – Hansen^, Corporan, McGeary^, ???. ^ = LHP

  35. #35 by Andrew Stebbins - November 25th, 2008 at 22:55

BinM, yes, but I also think McGeary starts in extended, goes to Vermont, then Hagerstown if he does well for a start or two. He needs to make some advancement at some point.

  36. #36 by Los Doce Ocho - November 25th, 2008 at 23:36

Brian – Would you view 40+ players eligible for the Rule 5 draft as a larger amount than normal for most teams?

  37. #37 by Brian Oliver - November 26th, 2008 at 13:15

LDO – That count doesn’t seem that out of whack to me. Maybe a bit high but not outlandish

re: Fitzpatrick and Poppert, both are on the restricted list but still have to be counted in the R5 discussions. No chance they get selected

re: the major/minor league portions of the draft. The Nationals can protect a certain number of additional players once they hit the Triple-A portion of the draft (I believe it’s in the 20s) so guys like Daniel, Stammen, etc will get protected. And the list expands for the Double-A portion.

  38. #38 by Hendo - November 30th, 2008 at 15:23

Whew. If there’s one guy I would hate to lose, Stammen would be the one.

  39. #39 by Hendo - November 30th, 2008 at 15:27

Brian, re LDO’s question, doesn’t the high number of Rule 5 eligibles reflect the rules change after 2006 that gave teams an extra year to protect players who weren’t on the 40-man?

If so I would expect it would be higher than normal for most teams this year and would go down some next year.
