A bit of navel-gazing, I know, but for those interested, I will be participating in a MLB mock draft starting at 7PM Eastern this evening. I’ll be representing the Nationals (naturally) at the #9 pick.
Thanks to Erik Manning from FutureRedbirds.com for putting this together.
UPDATE: The draft is underway much earlier than expected.
- Keith Law from ESPN and Meadow Party selects CA Buster Posey for Tampa Bay
- Bucco Blog selects 3B Pedro Alvarez for Pittsburgh [Comment as of 2:40PM on 5/29: no surprises so far with the first two picks]
- Royals Authority selects SS Tim Beckham for Kansas City [Comment as of 3:00PM on 5/29: Everything still going according to conventional wisdom; Crow, Smoak, GBeckham, Matusz, & Hosmer still on the board ... my unofficial order of preference (subject to change)]
- Oriole Magic selects LHP Brian Matusz for Baltimore [Comment: still no surprises]
- El Lefty Malo selects 1B Justin Smoak for San Francisco
- Future Fish selects CA Kyle Skipworth for Florida [Comment: Well, my choices are now done to GBeckham, Crow or Hosmer ... should be interesting]
- Reds Minor Leagues selects SS Gordon Beckham for Cincinnati
- Zoner Sports selects 1B/3B Brett Wallace for Chicago (AL)

Awesome, good luck! Would love to hear your pick-by-pick thoughts and/or your thoughts behind your pick.

Is this first round only?
#3 by Brian Oliver - May 29th, 2008 at 12:43
It’s likely to be only Rd 1 & Supp 1
#4 by Dick - May 29th, 2008 at 14:43
Brian: Can we expect you to do something we would all love to see happen in the real world? That is, publish your draft board?
#5 by Brian Oliver - May 29th, 2008 at 14:48
Dick – I’ll have some draft preview stuff up next week. Something along the lines of what I did last year (something along the lines of this)
#6 by Greg - May 29th, 2008 at 15:17
KLAW is a Rays fan? No wonder that guy is bitter.
#7 by Dick - May 29th, 2008 at 15:23
Brian: Ah, man! I was hoping to see your top 9 rated picks that you are going to use tonight! Dying to know if you like Matusz better than Smoak, for example!
BTW, you can always respond “I’ll pick the best player available”!
#8 by Brian Oliver - May 29th, 2008 at 15:25
Dick – As of right now, I’m leaning towards this order of the players remaining: Crow (I still like him a lot), Smoak/GBeckham (toss up … probably go Beckham b/c of his position), Matusz, & Hosmer

What’s the story behind the Nats using Johnny Holliday and the DL Du Jour for the color commentary?
What happened to Bob Carpenter?
#10 by e - May 29th, 2008 at 17:12
Bob Carpenter took the week-plus off to be with his family (daughter graduation, etc). LoDuca’s been in and out of the booth because Don Sutton has been dealing with laryngitis.

What’s taking the Orioles so long? Does Oriole Magic have to run his pick by Angelos?
#12 by John - May 29th, 2008 at 19:18
Wow… Smoak to SF. Could you possibly get GBeck?
#13 by Brian Oliver - May 29th, 2008 at 19:33
John – It’s holding true to form. Unless the Reds or White Sox guy goes against conventional wisdom, I’ll have whomever remains from Aaron Crow, Gordon Beckham, and Eric Hosmer.

Are you guys guessing what your teams will actually do, factoring in signability, or are you just picking purely on the players you believe would best help your team?
#15 by Brian Oliver - May 29th, 2008 at 21:28
Steven – I’m drafting the guy I think the Nats should target
#16 by John - May 29th, 2008 at 21:40
Brian: I would think that would be Hosmer, but who knows. The ChiSox drafter may have heard all the Wallace rumors and want him.
#17 by Hoagie - May 29th, 2008 at 23:02
GBeck, please =)
#18 by John - May 29th, 2008 at 23:19
He just went off the board. Looks like Crow or Hosmer barring a change of mind:)

Sorry it’s going slow, guys. Different folks got different things going on, as for me I’m ready to pick myself too. Good news, Brian. The ChiSox guy should have his pick late tonight or early tomorrow, so you’ll be up very soon.

Oooh, fun. You have a choice between Crow and Hosmer! On the clock now =)
