Final Tally – Part Deux
August 16th, 2007
With the signing of Jack McGeary, here is the final scorecard of the Nationals 2007 draft:
- 39 players signed out of 53 drafted
- The Nationals spent $7,619,300 in bonuses for players selected in the first ten rounds ($7,819,800 if you include the amount referenced to allow McGeary to attend Stanford full-time)
- That leaves the bonus amounts for an additional 26 players unknown. I am going to guess-timate a 15% reduction in bonus amount starting with the last known figure ($100K for Pat McCoy in the 10th round). With that assumption the Nationals spent roughly $8 million in bonuses from the 2007 draft.
- 2006: $5.1 million
- 2005: $4.0 million
- That leaves the bonus amounts for an additional 26 players unknown. I am going to guess-timate a 15% reduction in bonus amount starting with the last known figure ($100K for Pat McCoy in the 10th round). With that assumption the Nationals spent roughly $8 million in bonuses from the 2007 draft.
- All 20 of their top 20 players drafted have been signed
- 23 of their top 25 players drafted have been signed (18th rd 1B Sawyer Carroll and 20th rd OF Dan Cook)

Svrgula says it’s not over with David Duncan yet:)… Just kidding. Thanks for all this great coverage. I really appreciate your hard work everyday.
a very promising draft. that nats big board looks just a tiny bit better every day.
and seriously, thanks for all the hard work, NFA. i checked you guys after the game last night, hoping for good signing news… and then the first words i saw from you guys this morning were “with the signing of jack mcgeary….” just awesome stuff. keep the updates coming!
As my late father (lost him this spring, his funeral was Opening Day) always said to me after a game like last night’s, “Never in doubt; Had ‘em all the way”. Such is the case with McGeary!
NFA..Ditto of all the comments about your coverage, information and hardwork..NFA is the Best website available for us Nats fans…
Thanks all – I appreciate the kind words. It’s been fun working on this and the fact that things are improving makes it worthwhile to me.
I’m not particularly fond of “me too” posts, but, well, “me too” with the kudos to NFA. A “farm report” is particularly useful, interesting, enjoyable, when it’s with a team that asserts “The Plan” to build through the draft.
And, bottom line seems to be, 20-for-20 on the top picks. That’s serious!
Well done, Brian Oliver.
Well done Nationals!
