Considering that a number of pitchers might be ready for a promotion to Potomac next year, his improved performance, and the sad state of the Harrisburg team, do you think that Shairon Martis will open the season next year at the AA level?

  2. #2 by Brian Oliver - August 15th, 2007 at 08:44

Yes. I think it very likely Martis will open in Harrisburg. I’d imagine the way thinks are most likely to break out is pretty much the entire Potomac rotation starting in Harrisburg (Martis, Cory VanAllen, Justin Jones, and Marco Estrada). Detwiler is the wild card. He could start in either Harrisburg or Columbus.

Has Justin Jones accrued enough minor league service time to be minor league free agent after the season?

Martis is among in the win leaders in high class A in 2007. He will definitely advance to AA if not AAA in 2008.

Stupid Potomac having a random non-getaway-day day game. Otherwise, I’d definitely go too.

Justin Jones was signed last winter as a minor league free agent by the Nats, out of the Twins farm system.

Don’t know if he’s eligible after this year to be a free agent again. Maybe?

Actually Jones was a minor league Rule 5 guy. My guess is he will be a six-year free agent after 2007.

If I understand the rule, Jones would be a free agent after 2008. It’s six seasons after your first year.

For example, Joel Hanrahan started in the year 2000; he then was in the Dodgers system from ’01-’06(Six seasons); Then signed with the Nats for this season.

Jones’ first season was 2002. He’s played in the minors from ’03-’07(five seasons).

Any thoughts on who the nationals will give a September call-up? My vote is for Whitesell. I would like to see what kind of power he can show at the big league level.
