Preparing for the Offseason
Jim Bowden’s weekly DC Examiner article touches on what the Nationals’ plans are for some of their players this fall/winter.
Of note:
- LF Kory Casto: According to Bowden , Casto will not be called up this September. Instead, Casto will prepare himself for the 2006 Arizona Fall League where he can gain “experience playing against other teams’ top talent, so that by next spring training, he can fight for a spot on our major league roster.” Casto has shown improvement versus LHP in the month of August raising his numbers across the board

- SS Ian Desmond & SP Marco Estrada. Both are expected to join the recently restarted Hawaiian Winter League (great work if you can get it). Think of the Hawaiian League as a step below the Arizona Fall League. Desmond has not advanced as much as one would expect in 2006, struggling in his assignment to AA Harrisburg and only recently coming around in a return to Potomac. Estrada was a 2005 6th round draft pick and dominated in his brief stop in the GCL in 2006, but has struggled in a promotion to A Savannah.

- OF Ryan Church. It appears that Church will be spending time in the Mexican League this winter working on hitting breaking pitches.
