Minor League Moves: Catcher Edition

Syracuse activated CA Jamie Burke from the DL. That puts three catchers on the Chiefs roster (Devin Ivany & Carlos Maldonado). I guess one could be the option to replace the Pudge Rodriguez.

Potomac placed CA Derek Norris on the DL and added CA Wilfri Pena from extended spring training.

How much better than Devin Ivany or Carlos Maldonado is Jamie Burke? If Burke is not at full strength yet, I would prefer to let Ivany get his first cup of coffee in the bigs. Of course, I would prefer finding somebody else available who could play in the meantime, but this seems to be who we have.

Wow. I may have to take that back after seeing their hitting stats.

PHS – I am not as concerned about hitting stats as I am about actually being able to catch. My guess is that they wouldn’t see more than maybe two appearances in the time Pudge is on the DL. It’s more a matter of having an actual backup catcher so as not to keep Morse’s bat out of the PH/spot start rotation

Brian, how do you handicap this short-term solution at backup catcher, who is the favorite, in your opinion?

mark – The beat guys are saying it will not be Burke.

Maldonado has some major league experience (albeit brief … 50PA for Pittsburgh)

The minor league side of me would be happy to see Ivany get the shot. He’s been around for a while and it’s always nice to see someone get their chance at the majors

That being said, I’d bet the sign someone from outside the organization

Any word yet on when Wang and Detwiler are starting rehabs?

The Chiefs are on MASN tonight so you can all watch and form your own opinion. Last game I saw Maldonado he looked pretty polished defensively.

If that’s the case, then why these moves?
