The Blue Jays returned RHRP Zech Zinicola to the Nationals today. Zinicola was selected by Toronto in the Rule 5 draft but the Jays decided to not keep him on their 25-man roster (or work out a deal to acquire his rights).
Zinicola will report to the minor league camp.

That’s got to to a blow to the player’s ego. I guess the early promise on him goes the way of so many others.

Alex…not sure I see your reasoning. Here’s a kid who hasn’t (at least to my knowledge) come to the Bigs for a cup of coffee and he was taken by another team to get that shot. It didn’t work out and, from what I hear, the Nats wanted him back, as opposed to working out a trade. Not sure if that is such a big ego blow.

Well, for a guy who was said to be almost ready for the Bigs when he was drafted – back in June 2006 – the fact that it’s March 2010 and he, as a college pitcher, still hasn’t been added to anyone’s 40-man roster says it all. He’s not old at this point but should be further along, especially with the assumptions made when he was drafted.
As is, he goes back in the pile, of course now that pile has guys like Balester and Martis and the other guys who have been/are soon to be converted to relievers since the starting rotation at AAA is about to be jammed up.

If what you hear is right and the Nats wanted him back then maybe. I read it as the Jays not wanting to give up anything to keep him. Still, I think he has to show it this year or be consigned to AAAA status

I am pretty sure he would have to be on the 25 man for the entire season for them to keep him.

Zech, welcome back!!!!!!!!!

Russ, that, or they could have traded for him. it’s not a big deal, Rule 5 guys get “sent back home” every year.
