Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone who visits NFA.

    Toast :

Read that the Nats signed Tavares to a Minor league deal.

    Man, you scared me!

I thought you meant Julian “500 lb J-Lo” Tavarez.

  5. #5 by Jeff E - February 16th, 2010 at 12:10

Wily Taveras in Spanish means: herb Washington whoc should hit off a tee??? LOL!!!

  6. #6 by peric - February 16th, 2010 at 13:18

They signed Wang … wonder what happens to the 40-man with Wang and Tavares?

Sue Dinem: As good a definition of AD/HD (or Aspergers ;)) as any by none other than Jim Bowden:

“I had to trade for Elijah Dukes in Washington,” Bowden said, while discussing what small-market teams must do to succeed. “We couldn’t afford to go get a $10 million outfielder, so we traded an A-ball pitcher for a guy that’s been arrested I don’t know how many times. When we went into the room and talked to our owners about the deal, I told the owners straight out, I said ‘This guy has as good a chance of landing in jail as he does an All-Star game, but he could land in either one. We should take this chance.’

“But in a small market, what’s the choice? If you don’t make the trade, who’s gonna play right field? And that’s the question that has to be asked, and that’s why small markets take the gamble. Do you want to roll over and just quit? Do you want to just give up, because you don’t have the money to compete, or do you want to find a way to compete? GMs in small markets have to try to find a way.”

Oblio – Are you making fun of Bowden for his ADHD or for mistakenly calling Washington a small market?

  9. #9 by peric - February 16th, 2010 at 16:45

To paraphrase Bowden: “50-50 to land in jail or in the all-star game.” That is AD/HD-Aspergers-’mild brain disorder’. A brilliant star or … in a nutshell I guess, depending on the environment, parenting, etc.

Bowden sure did treat the team like it was small market … although many beg to differ with him wondering how he could afford a 10 million dollar outfielder like Kearns (who also played right field) then?

  10. #10 by Sue Dinem - February 16th, 2010 at 17:26

Hmm, Ron LeFlore managed to do both, wonder what that means?

  11. #11 by peric - February 16th, 2010 at 22:06

Probably means LeFlore is an Indigo.

  12. #12 by VladiHondo - February 17th, 2010 at 10:40

Round 1 – Slaten cut loose from 40 man.

Is Jesse English really hot stuff? Though I love his name, Atahualpo Severino could be tough to keep on the 40 man.

  13. #13 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 12:16

Severino is another in what is now a ever growing list of recovery projects for the Nats. He had TJ surgery.

  14. #14 by Sue Dinem - February 17th, 2010 at 13:52

    … in 2005, Oblio.

  15. #15 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 16:12

Is Severino the same pitcher that he was when he was a #1 pick, before 2005? Is he just another potential setup guy?

Not sure? Perhaps a rather ugly but consistent pattern seems to appear?

  16. #16 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 16:15

And I prefer Italian to describe Ms. Dinem:

‘La litigina’ serves quite well. A very simple Latin based word that led to words like litigator. If broken apart one can easily guess its meaning.

No, I’m quite sure Severino was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2004. As usual, Oblio, your point is missing.

  18. #18 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 17:19

Thank you Ms. ‘litigina’ for pointing that out.

  19. #19 by Sue Dinem - February 17th, 2010 at 17:30

    You’re welcome, Peter.

  20. #20 by Dick - February 17th, 2010 at 17:53

There’s only two kinds of pitchers, those that have been injured and those that will be injured in the future. Check that, I guess the third kind would be those that are injured now. As long as you stick to the first two, you do okay in baseball.

  21. #21 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 19:28

Ah, well but my name is actually Piero … but Peter will serve.

  22. #22 by Sue Dinem - February 17th, 2010 at 19:51

I’m sure it will — how are things at Pismo Beach?

A question for those with contacts at the PNats:

Yesterday night or this morning, the Potomac Nationals put a link on their website to a “15 million dollar ticket plan”, whereby you could buy a flexible 5 game plan including opening day and 4 other starts that could be chosen based on the pitching rotation.

Steinberg picked up on this and put it on his Bog and he has a screencap of the front page as well as link to the ticket plan page, which is still up.

Now, however, there is no link to this ticket plan on the front page of the PNats nor on their news page. Were they asked to take it down? Is this because the Nats don’t want Strasburg used to promote the team or because Strasburg will likely not pitch for Potomac?

    Link: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2010/02/potomac_nats_already_marketing.html

The link still works as of now, but I suspect the other affiliates may have cried foul so the PNats took it down. Personally, I thought it was clever hook to sell another mini-plan. If indeed the plan is 5 starts at A+, AA, and AAA before going to the parent club, Strasburg would only make three starts at Woodbridge.

I don’t live at Pismo … Aspen Hill would be closer … you know where the Sniper used to hang out? Gate of Heaven, K-mart, Seizure World, oh and Hoover’s cats in PETA’s shadow. :)

  26. #26 by peric - February 17th, 2010 at 21:15

Sure hope he spends a good amount of time in Potomac. Here’s hoping they don’t rush him to the majors because they lack a 1st rung starter.

Detwiler injured his hip and had surgery on Monday, will be out 10 weeks.

    Zuckerman had the scoop:

    http://natsinsider.blogspot.com/2010/02/detwiler-out-10-weeks-after-hip-surgery.html

(Btw, my opinion is if Strasburg is dominating, he shouldn’t be held back. He doesn’t seem like the type to hide an injury, so you might as well give him the best competition he can handle, whatever that is.)

  28. #28 by Jane - February 19th, 2010 at 07:21

    Ross Detwiler, get well soon!

Got my BA Prospect Handbook yesterday – highlights: our system is 21st, same as last year. Those in BA and not in Sickels: Graham Hicks (#19), Luis Atilano (#20), Roger Bernadina (22), Wil Atwood (23), Hassan Pena (26), Danny Rosebaum (30).

Sickels rate 37 Nat’s prospects, BA just the top 30. BA’s continued Ian Desmond love continues with him ranked 4th, while Sickels has him around 9.

    Brian…

Any update on where our farm players are headed? It seems like this year will be wide open with all of the new coaches and staff members…

You have to be excited with our farm system getting lots of attention and the Bryce Harper watch already starting…

Might be old news to some, but MASN announced an eight-game broadcast schedule for spring training. (Link in name)

  32. #32 by Paul - February 22nd, 2010 at 11:00

I didn’t know that. Thanks Sue. I can’t wait to see our boys play live again.

  33. #33 by Ric - February 22nd, 2010 at 16:16

Looks like the roster move accompanying the Wang signing was to put J. Zim on the 60-day DL. When can the 60-day DL be used, as soon as spring training starts?

  34. #34 by VladiHondo - February 23rd, 2010 at 13:20

    Baseball America’s Top 100 just came out – the Nats place 3: 92 Drew Storen; 38 – Norris; 2 – Strasburg.

HWSRN (the not-Nat from 2k8) is ranked 40th and is KC’s 2nd best pitching prospect.

Tampa Bay had 7 in the top 100, Cubs & Indians had 5. Atlanta, Cincy, Rox, Mutts, SD, SF, Balt, Boston, KC and Texas had 4.

    In NL East: Atlanta had #1, #32, #51, #69 Florida had #3, #20, #78 Mutts had #56, #62, #77, #88 Philthies had #15, #93 (they traded #25 -Drabek & #29 – Michael Taylor)

The Detweiler hip injury/surgery reminds me of what happened to Josh Girdley one winter.

  36. #36 by Kirkie - February 23rd, 2010 at 16:45

Didn’t Girdley have a basketball or motorbike accident or something?

Looks like Drew Storen will be having a chat on the BA site at 7pm ET tonight:

question about suspended players: AKA- Steven King 50 games. Is he able to participate with team in batting practice and such or is his suspension as any minor leaguer suspended involves staying away from park??? Should be interesting to see what org./Cathcart does @ 3b. Perhaps push the envelope on Steven Souza?? platoon with several guys??
