It seems that these prospect lists aren’t based entirely on where they were for 2009. Case in point: Michael Montgomery, who pitched in all of nine (9) games. Wouldn’t surprise me, either, if Marrero were to appear on the EL list despite only 75ABs there — let’s not forget BA’s obsession with youth.

To your point Sue, I was listening to the BA podcast and their were reviewing 2005 draft class. A where are they now and how did we do version podcast. They said a couple of times in the broadcast how they should have hit on this guy and this guy but they were so old for their league etc etc etc… very interesting listening if you’ve got the time ( I have plenty at work)…

Someone asked the standard “why did player a make it instead of player b?” Here was the response:

Ben Badler: We don’t rank players based on their contributions toward helping their minor league teams win games. We rank them based on our expectations of them at the major league level, which is a synthesis of their inputs (the quality of their pitches, delivery, command, etc.) and outputs (their performance records) to estimate their future talent levels. Berger was a good pitcher in the Carolina League and was crucial to Kinston’s run prevention, but he doesn’t project as well as guys like Duffy or Britton. Beger works at 89-91 with his fastball and touches 93 with a breaking ball that has its moments, but his offspeed stuff is inconsistent and his delivery has a lot of effort.

Could be wrong, but I don’t think Marrero will be rated among the EL’s top 20 porspects. On BA’s list Jason Heyward, Brian Matusz, Pedro Alvarez, Freddie Freeman among others finished their seasons in other leagues. Casey Kelly was rated in both the SAL and the Carolina League.

Questions were asked about three other Potomac Nats candidates during the chat, and the BA scout said that all three of Marrero, Meyers and Burgess have issues that prevented their inclusion. Marrero hits well but not enough for a first baseman and is susceptable to offspeed, Meyers has “fringy” stuff and is old for the level and may not succeed as he rises, and Burgess has a great swing but its long and he’s not selective enough right now.
