Agree with Jane about Mike getting a well-deserved promotion to Syracuse. Congratulations to Mike.

I was beginning to think Mike would never make it to Syracuse..congrats!

    BinM,

Orr? Orr? Orr? Talk about career minor league and a waste of a roster spot?

  5. #5 by pm - August 28th, 2009 at 15:34

When will Evan Bronson get promoted?

  6. #6 by peric - August 28th, 2009 at 15:39

Still 2 pitchers, 1 roster spot, 1 reserve TBD for the AFL… either could be a “A” or below player?

  7. #7 by estuartj - August 28th, 2009 at 15:42

I like that they aren’t handicapping Syracuse in a playoff run just to have someone like Hopper or Maxwell riding the pine.

Has the team announced a move to correspond to Balester reporting to AAA?

  8. #8 by estuartj - August 28th, 2009 at 15:45

How about Brad Meyer and/or Tom Malone for AFL or do the pitchers need to be relievers?

  9. #9 by peric - August 28th, 2009 at 17:50

SYR is 3.5 games back in the Wildcard. And does anyone believe they will catch Scranton-WilkesBarre which is closer?

  10. #10 by peric - August 28th, 2009 at 17:51

The pitchers could be starters. I think I agree with Brian’s thinking that maybe the AFL pitcher should be Aaron Thompson a left handed starting pitcher and former 1st round pick.

  11. #11 by BinM - August 28th, 2009 at 18:32

Remaining possible AFL nominees, IMO – Meyers (RHSP-HAR), Thompson (LHSP-HAR), Mandel (RHSP-HAR), Wilkie, (RHRP-SYR). Pick two; I personally like Thompson & Wilkie.

@peri- The selection of Orr from SYR had me a bit baffled at first. Then I got home & started looking at it – he’s a fairly steady middle infielder (better at 2B than SS, can play 3B in a pinch), and has a LH bat. He basically plugs in for Willie Harris as an IF sub, since Harris is a starter in CF with the loss of Morgan.

I like Thompson and Wilkie … although a lefty reliever to go with Storen as Thompson to Strasburg? How about Novoa or Severino? Given the “Orr” rationale?

  13. #13 by RD - August 29th, 2009 at 00:02

Why don’t we give Desmond the chance to get more AB’s and prove himself against better talent?

Or is it just arms that we can allocate?

If its an arm, Id make Meyers one of them. The kid has dominated this year. He’s getting up there in age, so why not see what he’s got against guys about to break into the bigs? See just how good he can be and if he can contend for a spot in the rotation next year.

Game recap reports that JR Higley was also promoted to Hagerstown.

Ian D was in the AFL last year….believe that mean he can not go back this Fall……Recall he hit but must have lead the league in errors…..kind of like he is now.

another example of why ESPN has ruined sports last night- who is that suit on baseball tonight who bashed the Nats while never playing porfessional ball….thank goodness EY Sr. and Eddie perez put him in his place….23 years ago next month….Rob Dibble as a Denver bear gave up that base hit to Billy Moore to lose the American Assoc. crown between denver and Indy…ironic now that he works for the ex-pos!!!! I wonder what Dibble would have said to that suit in studio last night….the bullpen was spent in Chicago…give STL a W as they go on to the NL central crown….yes! congrats Mike Daniel.

Here is a list of some of the prospects. I have more appreciation for how hard Brian has to work to make these lists. These guys were all born in ‘84 or later and seem to be prospects to me. I am sure Brian will come up with something to blow this list away but it was fun to put together a list. I am sure I left some people out and I know I don’t have them in great order after #1 but it was fun trying.

    1. Steven Strasburg
    2. Derek Norris
    3. Drew Storen
    4. Chris Marrero
    5. Michael Burgess

Hopefully Detwiller still belongs somewhere near the top 5.

  19. #19 by russ - August 30th, 2009 at 16:22

That was part of the difficutly of making the list…who is a prospect…who is already been a big leaguer? Alaniz, Martis, and Detwiler have already been there so I didn’t include them.

  20. #20 by pm - August 30th, 2009 at 16:48

Detwiler is not a prospect anymore because he has pitched over 50 innings in the big leagues.

russ, You have Destin Hood way too low on your list. He should be ranked between 5-10. I hope you don’t seriously think that Holder, Davis, Daniel, and Rhinehar are better prospects than Hood.

Chico just reported Nationals traded second baseman Ronnie Belliard to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon for minor league pitcher Luis Garcia and a player to be named later. Garcia, at the time of the deal, was pitching for Class A Great Lakes of the Midwest League.

  22. #22 by RD exposfan - August 30th, 2009 at 17:21

Luis Garcia is a 22 yo rhrp, played 34 games and ERA 2.92 and 5 saves

    pm…

I think Hood is a good prospect, however, he didn’t tear it up in Vermont. Leondard Davis was the minor league player of the year last year. It is tough to rank some of those guys and that is why we have Brian. You are probably right that the potential of Hood is pretty solid.

I also don’t know where our recent international signings belong on the list

  26. #26 by Rich - August 31st, 2009 at 07:16

I have a question for everyone:

Hendo’s Hutch at Nationals Pride posted some of the Dodgers top Pitching prospects: http://www.nationalspride.com/columnists/post.cfm?blog=hendo&id=402&story=updated-ronnie-belliard-to-dodgers

Is it possible we could get one of them as the PTBNL in the Ronnie Belliard trade. I didn’t think we could possibly get that much in a 5 week rental. Am I misunderstanding the value of Belliard?

What has Jeff Kobernus (2nd round 2009) been doing. I heard he signed early and went to the minors but haven’t heard anything since.
