From the last thread (hopefully someone in the know will be able to give a nice educated guess):
I’ve been following (somewhat) Destin Hood’s progress in Hagerstown. Does he get a promotion to Potomac before the year is out? Would love to see him play and I enjoy getting to the games in Woodbridge.

TimDz – If I were to bet, I’d say no. Rizzo seems to have a much more patient philosophy when it comes to promotions. Norris knocked the cover off the ball in Hagerstown but still spent the whole season there. I’d imagine the same would hold true for Hood

If you were to “bet,” huh?
Part of you is obviously still in Vegas!
Thanks for the insights.

Quite right–Rizzo seems a lot more methodical about the process than Bowden was (as about a lot of other things). Midseason promotions from A to AA or AA to AAA will be much rarer than before, and jumps from AA to the big club rarer still. AAA may now be less a holding pen for marginal veterans and more a finishing school for prospects.

WOW, Mike Daniel released any idea how he is taking the news? Any team interested in him? Mike is a good guy and I wish him the best.

I read that Colin Balester has been sent to extended spring training to learn to be a reliever? The big board shows him on the roster and as a starter ahead of JD Martin who is in the pen? You seem to like to put him there? ~laughing~
I’m pretty sure Mike Rizzo designated JD Martin as a starter and has he really done anything to lose that job other than get back spasms? If anything wouldn’t Martis be the next to be tried in the bullpen given his record?

I believe that if Norris were to really get good with the defensive aspects of catching and start hitting like Mike Morse did last year in 2 different AAA leagues you would see him promoted fairly rapidly.
No one is really knocking the cover off the ball except for Chase Lambin. Rizzo was pretty complimentary relative to Michael Burgess prospects and progress in Potomac. Inferring that they would be willing to try to find solutions to the right field problem from within. I think the next step in that would happen when Morse is returned from his rehab assignment.

Appears to have been fixed, but I’m sure Brian will offer you a refund on the money you paid.

Big Board is fixed … I missed Mark’s post about Balester. That actually helps because now the Chiefs are at 24/24.
Now to figure out where I’m off with Hagerstown

We all have our favorites Sue … and we all know that he favors Wilkie but every time there seems to be too many starters in the Syracuse rotation he seems to like to move JD Martin down ??? And really doesn’t that do a disservice to Andrew Kown who looks far more effective in long to middle relief than as a starter?
By the way it appears Mike Rizzo disagrees with your scouting report on Michael Burgess? ~smiles~ Just saying …

only reason I had Martin among the relievers was because he wasn’t starting (due to the back spasms) and it felt odd to have him floating outside of both RP and SP

I suppose it would look that way if you took “near future” to mean this season, but it’s not like Rizzo would go on the record about a prospect with an eye towards trading him, right? GMs never do that, right. ~rolls eyes at utter naivete~

I wouldn’t use Norris experience in Hagerstown as an example for Hood or Ramirez, Rizzo told us he was keeping Norris at Low-A so he wouldn’t be distracted from his work behind the plate by trying to master a higher level with the bat at the same time.
Does show a lot more patience though, but I would say if both those players are excelling with the bat AND Defense/Baserunning/etc they would not be held back from a promotion they have “earned”

Harper was 5-12 this weekend with 2 HR, a 2b and a 3b. Now at .417/.509/.917. 1.426 is not a bad OPS for a kid playing with wood bats!

Mike Daniel released????

Mike Daniel is gone. Mixed emotions because he seemed like a good guy who you wanted to see make something of himself. On the other hand he was getting old for AA and he hadn’t shown any signs he could handle AAA. You hope that he can figure out what to do with his life, but he’s got to be staring at a life of organizational depth. Is he the kind of guy who could try to make something for himself playing in Japan or something?

@TOSD – Not likely, but perhaps Daniel can catch on in the indy leagues, most of which start up the weekend of/before Memorial Day

Hood should stay in Hagerstown all year. He’s got a good average, but he still hasn’t developed the power yet, and still strikes out quite a bit. Not to mention he obviously needs work stealing bases, because they never use his speed. Better to get the work at a lower level, gain more confidence than to rush him and do permanent damage.
