The Nationals just issued a press release announcing the signing of RHRP Matt Capps. Still no word on who will come off of the 40-man (which is full) to open a spot for him.
It seems the most likely candidates are Marco Estrada or Luis Atilano.

Luis Atilano I’m thinking. Rizzo’s call, eh.

I would assume that makes the dropped player a free agent immediately. Any problems agreeing on a minor league deal immediately? I am still unclear on the Colome situation and why he was prevented from re-signing.

alexva – The player would be exposed to waivers first. Any team could claim them as long as they added them to their 40-man roster. If they made it through waivers, guys like Atilano & Estrada would not have enough service time to be free agents.

Bill Ladson provides an update via Twitter (@washingnats) … With Matt Capps signed, we still don’t know who will be taken off the Nats’ 40-man roster. Nats will make a decision in a couple of days.

Wasn’t Nieves signed to a minor league deal? Wouldn’t that take him off the 40 man and a non-roster invitee?

Nieves was offered arbitration so he’s still on the 40-man

If it were up to me I would drop Slaten before either Atilano or Estrada… can’t imagine Slaten would be a hot pickup and I have a hard time believing he will beat out Everyday Eddie for the 2nd LHRP role-

Off topic, but I’m really glad to see that Dawson finally got elected into the hall of fame. Living 20 minutes from the Olympic Stadium, i got to see him play many times while growing up and let me tell you, what an outstanding player he was. He could do it all – the pure definition of 5-tool talent. And to think how much better he could have been if not for the turf ruining his knees. Congrats Hawk! What a joy it was to watch you play.Hopefully, Raines will follow you in.

Dawson was awesome!
But re Capps and the 40-man roster, isn’t it simply a matter of putting Jordan Zimmermann on the 60-day disabled list?

KT – There is no DL in the off-season. DL only becomes an option after spring training ends
