All of these players are available for the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft. I only missed six players from my original list (Carlos Alvarez, Jamie Burke, Wilson Eusebio, Adam Fox, Angelberth Montilla, & Jose Pinales) while having two guys on the list who have either been released or are not actually eligible (Yhonson Lopez & Jose Taveras).
Still working on trying to figure out who is eligible for the Triple and Double-A portions from the list above. Teams are allowed to protect guys at each level after the major league portion of the R5 ends. Additional players are protected prior to the Triple-A portion, excluding them from selection. And after the Triple-A portion ends, more players can be protected prior to the Double-A portion of the draft. Typically, any player of note not protected on the 40-man will get protection prior to the Triple-A portion (see Yunior Novoa or Josh Wilkie).

Brian,
Did not a few of these guys get added to the 40 man a few weeks back thus they are not eligible any more?

Good catch … was still updating the list and hit post vice save

Thanks for the hard work…..wish there were more news….season ticket sales must be at a stand still right about now.

I guess this yet again is a knock on the Post that we have no idea to whom the Nats offered arbitration today. The moves of other teams are pretty clear by now, in large part.

Brian: Correct me if I’m wrong , but isn’t eligibility based on prior year levels – At the AAA portion of the rule-V, only players who were at AA-or-lower levels are eligible?
#6 by BinM - December 1st, 2009 at 19:45
Clearly I missed something along the way – when did the Nationals acquire Adam Fox?

Thanks, Brian, for all the hard work. I can understand your soft spot for Wilkie; I’m very curious the thinking of sendinghim to the AFL, and after he does well, THEN not protecting him. I hope when you get a chance you’ll ask Rizzo about this.
Fan favorite is not of trivial importance with a 100 loss team. Especially after he got that terrific writeup in the Post just a few days before.

Perhaps Wilkie gets included in a trade early in the week, and this all becomes moot.

BinM – The eligibility for the minor league portion of the R5 draft isn’t based on highest level played at. Each team has the ability to protect a certain number of players at the Triple-A level, preventing their selection during the Triple-A portion. But this does not necessarily mean they are going to be assigned to Triple-A.
As for Fox, he was a minor league F/A signing
Mark/PHS – It will be interesting to see what happens with Wilkie. It seems the Nationals are assuming that they can slip a RHRP who doesn’t throw in the high-90s through the R5.

I hope they’re right!

Adam Foster ranks D. Norris as the 5th best catching prospect in the minors.

Is Carlos “Smiley” Alvarez on the list because of his “alleged” age at signing vs actual (7 year gap) or actual signing age vs “alleged” current age? (negative 2)
Sorry, couldn’t resist ;)

Brian
Bill Ladson’s article dated 12/02/2009 states, ” The Nationals could be a major players in the Rule 5 draft…..No doubt they’ll be looking for pitching”. Since the Nats are at the 40 man limit on their major league roster, they will not be able the draft for that roster. Is Ladson referring to the minor league levels rosters?

Louis – They have until 12/8 to clear 40-man spots … and there are spots they can clear

Each of those guys listed by ProjectProspect are ahead of some big prospect names. I haven’t heard of it before, but the favorable reports are welcome. Here is a Rule 5 snippet from Klaw, NatsTown’s favorite analyst:
The current CBA gutted the player pool for the Rule 5 Draft, but there’s already one name building up some buzz: Angels pitcher Bobby Cassevah. A star high school quarterback who had committed to LSU, he signed with the Angels in 2004 for $175,000 after having Tommy John surgery. Cassevah is a groundball machine; he has a groundball rate of 70.3% per minorleaguesplits.com, with average fastball velocity, occasionally flashing a 94.

One area where one should look is the Winter Leagues.
Joakim Soria was pretty unimpressive until his season in the Mexican winter league before the Rule 5 draft. He dominated and KC took a flyer on him. 3 years and 89 saves later, he’s still their closer.

Brian, Thanks…I didn’t know about the Dec 8th date..I agree that there are players they can clear if necesaary.
