CSN Fall Season

The College of Southern Nevada starts its fall scrimmage schedule on Friday 9/11.

Why is this of interest to us?

Well, if you take a look at CSN’s roster, a couple of names should jump out.

First is Bryan Harper, a 2008 31st round draft pick by the Nationals out of a Las Vegas HS. he did not sign and spent the 2009 season with Cal State Northridge.

But the name right below him is of greater interest for the 2010 DraftWatch season … Bryce Harper.

If they regularly update the site, I’ll start the DraftWatch earlier than last year.

    you’re the best.

I second your displeasure with Riggs for playing Guzman at SS. And there is no reason he can’t play 2nd.

Wasn’t Bryan Harper drafted as a position player? He is listed as a LHP now.

Bryce is listed as and IF/CA, bet we see him a bunch at 3B so he can play everyday.

Bryan Harper was drafted as a LHP by the Nationals … check the Draft Track link in the top right

Brian, any idea when Bryce Harper can petition for eligibility for the draft and/or when MLB would rule on such a petition?

No idea. I would think that if he has documentation that he passed his GED and then plays for CSN, he has met the criteria for draft eligibility

Whomever drafts Bryce Harper (likely the Nats) will also draft his brother late in the draft to throw Bryce a bone. IIRC, the Rays did this Tim Beckham, and the Twins did this with Joe Mauer as it’s SOP when there is draft eligible brother that would otherwise have minimal interest as a prospect.

Did Nats originally draft Bryan with Bryce in mind? Pure speculation of course, but I applaud foresight and laying the groundwork.

Keep up the good work Brian. I check your site most everyday even though I only post every three months.

Off topic, former Nat OF Marlon Byrd homered and drove in 4 today as Texas closed to within 1.5 games of the Red Sox in the the AL Wildcard race. Byrd is hitting .287 with 17 HRs 77 RBI; he is on pace for a 20 HR 90 RBI seaason, and he is a solid defensive OFer. Not sure if anyone saw that coming when he left the Nats.

Pilchard, I’m wondering if that’s ballpark effect, or something else? IIRC, he was a .230 popgun when the Nats let him go; I’ll have to look at his splits (Home-Away).

On another subject, even though the minor-league season just wrapped up, I’m looking at the relief corps & dreaming about a bullpen in POT with Dill/Amato/Bronson for 2010. That’s some serious shutdown power, folks.

Pilchard – took a look at M.Byrd & the splits are skewed. 11HR @home, 5 away in equal games played. Shows power to L-LC, with the majority of his 2B being line shots to the left-field corner at home. He’s also put on a few pounds – 6′0″, 245.

If Gary Matthews Jr. can do it in Texas, anyone can… I hope some sucker signs Marlon for $40 mil.

Who knew that “CSN” as in College of Southern Nevada would take on greater significance in the DC area than the other CSN (Comcast Sportsnet). Anyone know where CSN is? Perhaps I can convince the wife I need to go to see Harper for myself and swing by Vegas on the way.

    Go nats. Go Royals

CSN has 3 campus sites in the Las Vegas area. The baseball team plays at the Henderson, NV campus. Here is a link to CSN campus map:
