The Nationals released OF Corey Patterson from Triple-A Syracuse and activated OF Mike Vento from the DL.
This opens up a spot on the 40-man as Patterson made a brief stopover in Washington earlier this season.

Who is the favorite to be put on the 40 man? Also why do the Nats have L. Montz on the 40 man? He is having a terrible year.
#2 by Brian Oliver - July 29th, 2009 at 15:14
homegrown – Montz is there just to have an emergency catcher available without necessitating a 40-man roster move.
Not sure about the Patterson thing, it could have been something in his contract that allowed him to go as of some date
They could just leave it open for now. They also have moves with Olsen/DYoung to 60-day, if necessary.

Brian-
What are the Nats waiting for with Olsen and Young… why don’t they immediately put them on the 60 Day? They, along with other clubs, seem to wait until a move is necessitated as opposed to moving them quickly. Thanks

Ryan – You can only make 60-day DL moves when you are at 40/40 and need the roster space

gotcha, never knew that… thanks-

At one point, Corey Patterson was the #3 prospect in baseball. Now he can’t keep his spot on the Syracuse Chiefs roster. Sad.

Hooray!! Patterson is gone!

Hmmm, this smells a little like a roster-spot clearance by the big club; Patterson didn’t exactly figure in the long-term plans. Maybe something cooking over the next 48 hours?

I heard Clint Everts will be a FA in the off-season unless they put him on the 40-man. With his improvement/performance this year, (plus being w/ the franchise since ‘02) you’d like to think he’d have some value from the ‘pen. His ERA has plummetted this year as he rose to Harrisburg and is matching the talent level. Sign Clint!

Norris is the DH tonight.

Odd timing unless either 1) He requested it (unlikely, he was all ready on the 40-man, on the Nationals. Who else would give him that chance at this point?) 2) Something else is cooking and they think they might need 40-man space in a day or two.

Seems like with Dukes there, Maxwell needing to play, and Padilla outperforming him, plus the acquisition of Morgan (stabilizing CF defense) and the return to health of Bernadina (hopefully soon), he’s just the odd man out. Maybe they just can’t get him PT anymore. I’d be surprised if this is solely a move to open up 40-man room, since they could always move Dmitri, Olson and Flores to the 60-day DL and free up three spots. It would have to be something really big cooking to need four 40-man spots. Maybe Bernadina will be ready to play soon?

Does a player on the 40-man roster but playing in the minor leagues get paid the major league minimum for being on the major league 40-man roster?

Anyone think that CLE needs a RH hitting OF after they have dealt Francisco and Gutierrez???
#16 by Andrew Stebbins - July 29th, 2009 at 23:48
Not for awhile. They aren’t contending.
#17 by Andrew Stebbins - July 29th, 2009 at 23:51
Nope. I believe the “bonus” for being on the 40-man is $50,000 plus the league’s pay (AAA, AA, etc.). It can get tricky once we start talking about split-contracts but as a rule of thumb, just the 50k extra. Brian, correct me if I’m wrong on this.

Does anyone think Justin Maxwell is going to get called up in the next two weeks?
#19 by Brian Oliver - July 30th, 2009 at 08:42
Only if we see a trade or two

In reference to one of the first comments – let’s hope that an emergency does not occur that would create a need for CA Montz in DC. It would be sad to see either Nieves or Bard injured and only players who are willing to work hard to avoid a bad year belong in the majors.

mcgalinmd- There are at least two outfielders more deserving of a callup from Syracuse, than toolsy Maxwell.
#22 by mcgalinmd - July 30th, 2009 at 12:18
I’m just asking because if he was called up, it would destroy a 14 year old’s vacation as we are traveling to see the Chiefs in Durham, NC next week. I’ve been watching his stats and it seems that he’s struggling and won’t get called up anytime soon. But as we all know, stranger things happen all the time.

I’m curious as to why Montz is thought of as the “emergencey catcher” by the Nats when the consensus by pitchers in Harrisburg is that his defensive skills are “brutal”.
#24 by Robin - July 30th, 2009 at 16:21
Rocket Surgeon, do you mean “brutal” defensive skills as in good or bad?
#25 by Rocket Surgeon - July 30th, 2009 at 18:15
I’ll try and put this in context: When asked what kind of receiver Montz is, the reply is “he’s brutal”.
