Release just out from the Nationals
The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Andrew “Dean” Weaver, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Weaver posted a team-leading 10 saves (fourth in the Southeastern Conference) as a junior at Georgia in ‘09, going 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 29 relief appearances. Over his three-year collegiate career, the 21-year-old went 11-6 with 12 saves and tallied a 2.65/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (106 strikeouts/40 walks) in 122.1 innings.
With today’s signing, the Nationals have now agreed to terms with 26 players from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, including nine of their top 12 picks.
Unsigned from the top 12 picks are 1st rounder Stephen Strasburg, 5th rounder Miguel Pena, and 8th rounder Roberto Perez (the Nationals had two first round picks, so that 9/12 is from the first 11 rounds)

I also hope they can sign reliever Nate Karns. I always thought it was Weaver or Karns, so at this point landing him would surprise me.

Has there been any update on any of the other unsigned guys?

Brian – if you could have two more signings (not including SS), would you want Pena and Perez, or one of the HS fliers?

He is for now.

Aaron Seuss…OF’er correct? Why did he pitch for Pot. tonight?

Suess is being used to save the bullpen. Has been successful in previous outings, just not so much on this outing.

Potomac was up 14-3 when he came in. Seuss is a “disaster” pitcher of sorts used when they are up big or down by a lot to try to save the bullpen.

@wallyball: Karns was a Jr/eligible – IMO, he may go back to Texas Tech & try to improve his value for 2010. Between Pena & Perez, the Nationals probably have a better shot at Pena, but might take a pass if he is asking for much over slot. I’ve got to say, some of the early returns on the 2009 draft are looking good (Storen & Holder in particular, but Jordan, Bloxom, Nicol, King & Bronson as well). Let’s hope they sign Strasburg to close the books on the ‘09 draft.

It is imposible for the NAts to sign Karns when they are not even speaking to him, no legit offers to him as of yet fromwhat the rumors speak of.
