Thanks, Brian, I’m starting to root for Cleveland and San Diego. As you know, we still haven’t signed from this draft choices from rounds 1, 5, 7, 8, 12, 15, 18, and 25 plus the very late round choices. Other than SS, whose situation is followed in detail, what do you think our chances are of signing the others out of the top 25?
Let’s play two!

SP63 – My guess would be we’ll see the signings of 5 (HS LHP Miguel Pena) and either 7 (Georgia JR RHP Dean Weaver) -or- 12 (TX Tech RHP Nate Karns).
I put 8 (HS SS Roberto Perez) and 15 (HS 1B Corey Davis) at 50/50.
18 (HS SS Martcus Stroman) and 25 (W Kentucky RHP Matt Ridings) are longshots.
I would be pleasantly surprised if they could get 5 or 6 more guys signed (including Strasburg).

While I would love to see the Nats sign each of their top 25 picks, Strasburg has to sign for the draft to be anything other than an unmitigated disaster.
Given that the Nats are the worst team in MLB, they can not fail to sign their first round pick two years in a row, especially when Strasburg is considered the best pitching prospect ever.
BTW, any idea of what Strasburg is doing now? I assume he is working out and maintaining his conditioning, but I am curious.

@Pilchard
While I agree with you sentiment, it is just as possible for the NATS to fail to sign Strasburg as it was for them to take two out of three from the Yankees at Yankee stadium. Of course, if Stranburg signs and promptly blows out his arm at Vermont or GCL that could also be a unmitigated (mitgated because, by God, we signed him?!) diaster.

Agree. If Strasburg signs and then suffers a career ending or a career-altering injury, that would be a disaster. That said, the Nats have the ability to control whether they sign Strasburg more than whether he gets injured (unless they fail to properly manage his workload).
Failing to communicate with Strasburg and his representatives over the last month does not lead me to believe that that the Nats are making every effort to get a deal done.

From what I’ve read Rizzo & Co may not be talking to Strasburg but they’re talking to Boras. (Read Boswells chat from Thursday at the WAPO.) This is Boras’ M.O. The Nats are doing things the right way. They’ll sign this kids. When or where he plays is another topic, eh.

People who think that the Nats are doing anything wrong right now with Strasburg don’t know anything about Scott Boras. He likes nothing more than a nervous front office. There’s a chance the Nats could offer him $15 million and he would walk away. And the Nats would be blameless.

Tragic numbers super sized. How are the numbers compared to the 1969 expansion expos 40 years ago under Gene Mauch????
