I figured I take the time to break down how the Nationals utilized the picks in the first thirty rounds of the 2009 draft (31 picks).
From a macro level, the Nationals spent their first 31 selections primarily on the pitching side. Twenty of the selections were used on arms (meaning eleven were used on bats).
Of the 20 arms …
- 14 were right-handed pitchers
- 6 were left-handed pitchers
- 2 were high schoolers (1 RHP & 1 LHP)
- 5 were from junior/community colleges (4 RHP & 1 LHP)
- 1 was a draft eligible sophomore (and has already signed)
- 7 were college juniors (5 RHP & 2 LHP)
- 5 were college seniors (3 RHP & 2 LHP)
And the 11 bats …
- 1 was a first baseman
- 1 was a second baseman
- 1 was a third baseman
- 6 were shortstops
- 2 were corner outfielders
- 6 were high schoolers (5 SS & 1 1B)
- 1 was a junior/community college (OF)
- 2 were college juniors (2B & corner OF)
- 2 were college seniors (3B &SS)
Parsing it further, I split the draft into thirds. The first third includes rounds 1-10; the second third 11-20; and the final third 21-30.
Rounds 1-10 (11 total picks)
- 8 pitchers/3 bats
- 7 collegians/1 JuCo/3 high schoolers
- 6 RHP/2 LHP/1 2B/2 SS
- 2 college seniors (both RHP)
- 4 college juniors (2 RHP, 1 LHP, & 1 2B)
- 1 college sophomore (RHP)
- 1 junior college player (RHP)
- 3 high schoolers (2 SS & 1 LHP)
Rounds 11-20 (10 total picks)
- 4 pitchers/6 bats
- 6 collegians/2 JuCo/2 high schoolers
- 3 RHP/1 LHP/1 1B/1 3B/2 SS/2 OF
- 3 college seniors (RHP, 3B & SS)
- 3 college juniors (2 RHP & 1 OF)
- 2 junior college players (LHP & OF)
- 2 high schoolers (SS & 1B)
Rounds 21-30 (10 total picks)
- 8 pitchers/2 bats
- 4 collegians/3 JuCo/3 high schoolers
- 5 RHP/3 LHP/2 SS
- 2 college seniors (both LHP)
- 2 college juniors (RHP & LHP)
- 3 junior college players (all RHP)
- 3 high schoolers (2 SS & 1 RHP)

I saw Storen pitch against Oregon State on the 23rd. He looked very good against a very good OSU team. Throws a heavier ball than Cordero.
