Keith Law’s Top 100 Draft Prospects

ESPN’s Keith Law has his top 100 draft prospects (Insider access). I’ll share the #1 and #10 … Strasburg and Jacob Turner, respectively.

    Yay, another Boras client!

    /sarcasm

Paxton at #3? wow, that’s the first time I’ve seen him in the discussion in the top 10. I think two names for the Nats to target are Turner and Shelby Miller. Of course, both would probably have a pretty hefty price tag.

    Caught my eye as well

I really think that after Strasburg and Ackley it’s a crapshoot with the same 12-15 players in differing orders on each team’s board

I can’t help but think that Grant Green is pretty high on their list. If ownership came to the game with the scouts, that sends a message to me, even though they were in the state at the time anyway. I don’t think they’d have come to the game if Rizzo hadn’t really talked up Green.

Andrew S: I would love to get either guy. Turner is supposed to be expensive(Boras), but my impression is Miller and Purke all both signable.

    No HS pitchers, please!

Ditto Dick… I just had to write that out!

What’s so wrong with HS pitchers? I think it would be a reach to take someone like Leake or Brothers or Minor at #10. We need to take the best player available, regardless of position, signability, or collegiate v. high school. And I think guys like Purke and Miller are ahead of Leake, etc.

Andrew, take a look at this.

Found this on BA’s draft tracker:

Chad Jenkins, rhp, Kennesaw State Jenkins entered the year as a first-five rounds selection, but he’s steadily climbed the charts and now has a chance to be selected in the first 15 picks, and he’s been linked to the Nationals at No. 10 overall. Jenkins’ velocity has been consistent most of the season, sitting at 91-93 mph usually and touching as high as 96. He was a pitchability guy coming into the year, but now he’s a pitchability guy with above-average stuff, as well as durable 6-foot-4, 225-pound body. Teams that like him project him as a mid-rotation starter who may not need much time to matriculate in the minors, further hastening his move up draft boards.

Thanks Cole. That’s interesting. I prefer high upside guys with high picks myself. Perhaps Rizzo and Brown think he’s another Zimmermann or at least see more than a mid rotation guy.

It may be that they have their high upside guys in Zimmermann and Strasburg and are looking for safer bets to fill out the rotation in the near future.

It could be. I believe that you only have so many opportunities to get high impact guys. When you have a high pick, you have to take advantage. I’ll be disappointed in them if they leave a Grant Green or Shelby Miller on the board for this guy.

That being said, in Rizzo I trust. He has a great record.

  13. #13 by Andrew S. - May 13th, 2009 at 21:35

Jenkins is #57 on Keith Law’s list. Enough said.

  14. #14 by John - May 13th, 2009 at 21:37

I was looking at boxscores between periods of the Caps getting crushed and Jenkins has put up some pretty impressive numbers lately. Perhaps the Nats are ahead of the game. Could this be another Zimmermann?

  15. #15 by Andrew Z. Stebbins - May 13th, 2009 at 21:39

I wouldn’t mind them taking Rex Brothers at 10. Has that been discussed at all?

  16. #16 by John - May 13th, 2009 at 22:04

Jenkins has pitched 50 2/3 innings and given up 7 ER, 32 hits, with 55 K and 7BB in his last six starts.

Impressive considering that six of the runs came in his most recent start.
