A Variety of Things
Posted by Brian Oliver in Fall, Harrisburg (AA), Management, Players, Syracuse (AAA), Washington (MLB) on November 19th, 2009
Here are a series of links of interest with my quick thoughts:
- The Nationals officially hired Davey Johnson as a Senior Advisor to Mike Rizzo. It’s nice to see another solid baseball guy in the front office though I wonder if there is any possibility that Johnson could be a replacement for Jim Riggleman.
- The Nats held a roundtable with the local writers where a few things came out:
- Added 17 new front office positions to include scouts. Still no official word on if there is anyone in the Pacific Rim. I’ll keep asking
- Finalized a deal to build a new Dominican complex in Boca Chica. Good to see they are getting their own place after having to scramble for a location at the last minute this past year.
- Nats scouts have already watched potential 2010 #1 overall Bryce Harper and that he is not as clear cut a #1 as Strasburg was in 2009. That could just be posturing.
- Tracee Hamilton has a feature on NFA favorite Josh Wilkie. Nice to see Josh get some publicity in the local media.
- and a blog post on Jeff Mandel and how the Baby Nats will be competing for the AFL title this weekend with Strasburg starting the championship game
- The Syracuse Chiefs lost money again in 2009 but less than they did in 2008. An extended assignment of Stephen Strasburg is what they are hoping for in 2010. I don’t think Strasburg will start the season in Triple-A. Coming from a guy who was born in Syracuse and still has family there, it’s still pretty cold in April in upstate New York and I’m not sure the Nationals will want to risk injury having Strasburg pitch in a chilly environment.
- Geoff Morrow of the Patriot News has an update on the renovations on City Island.
- and news that Randy Tomlin will be returning as Harrisburg’s pitching coach in 2010. Tomlin will again be working with Randy Knorr (they previously worked together in Potomac in 2007-08)
- John Sickels has his preliminary Nats Top 20 up at Minor League Ball and the #1 is as expected. I’m working on my own top prospect list and should have it up within a week or so
- and on a final note, Dan Steinberg tweeted that the Post is now looking for a new Nats beat writer after Chico Harlan decided to pursue other opportunities. I enjoyed his writing as he attempted to find different angles of a really bad team. I’ve learned over the years how much of a drain the day in and day out can be … and that’s just me doing the Across the Affiliates and other stuff I do here at NFA. I don’t have to see the players, managers, management every day, fostering relationships yet still attempting to be critical when the need arises. I don’t have to work under tight deadlines attempting to bring an interesting perspective to gamers. The other major sports have many more off-days that allow for a battery recharge. Harlan has his detractors, especially after his Washingtonian interview earlier this year, but I want to thank him and wish him the best of luck.

The regular season for the minor leagues finished on Labor Day with the four full season affiliates polishing off their schedules.
I’ll update with any organizational or roster news I hear but I don’t expect much information until the fall & winter leagues kick off in a month or so.
Syracuse
- Defeated Pawtucket 5-3 (box/gamer). RHP Shairon Martis gave up three runs on six hits and a walk over 6IP with two strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. A trio of right-handers promoted after the game finished off the final game of the season. RHP Marco Estrada pitched a scoreless inning; RHP Zack Segovia gave up two hits and struck out one in one inning to pick up the win; and RHP Logan kensing earned his 17th save with a scoreless ninth. CF Mike Daniel was 1/3 with a walk; DH Brad Eldred was 1/4 with a solo homer; LF Leonard Davis was 1/4; 2B Seth Bynum was 1/3 with a double & run scored; SS Ian Desmond was 2/4 with a run scored; and CA Gustavo Molina was 1/4 with a double & three RBI.
- The Syracuse Post-Standard calls the first year of the National/Chief partnership a success
Harrisburg
- I wanted to thank Harrisburg’s Terry Byrom for the invitation to sit with him on the last broadcast of the season. I enjoyed it and hope that those who listened found it interesting.
- Defeated Bowie 4-2 in a rain-shortened six and half inning game (box/gamer). RHP Brad Meyers gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks over 5IP while striking out seven to pick up the win. LHP Justin Jones earned the save with a scoreless sixth, walking one and striking out two. LF Bill Rhinehart led the way on offense, going 3/3 with a solo homer & two-run double; 1B Chris Marrero was 2/3 with a double & RBI; CA Sean Rooney was 1/3; SS Jemel Spearman was 1/3 with a run scored; and RF Francisco Plasencia was 1/4 with a run scored.
Potomac
- Defeated Kinston 9-4 (box/gamer). Potomac scored eight runs over the final two innings to both win their final game of the season and knock the K-Tribe out of the playoffs. LHP Will Atwood allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits & two walks over 5IP with two strikeouts. RHP Hassan Pena picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit & striking out two and RHP Cole Kimball earned his 9th save with two shutout innings of relief. 2B Michael Martinez was 2/5 with two runs & one RBI; SS Danny Espinosa was 3/4 with a double, triple, stolen base, run & two RBI; LF Jesus Valdez was 1/4 with a double, run & three RBI; RF Michael Burgess was 2/5 with a double & RBI; and CF Boomer Whiting was 1/2 with two walks, one RBI, two runs & his 54th stolen base of the season.

Labor Day News
Posted by Brian Oliver in Across the Affiliates, Harrisburg (AA) on September 3rd, 2009
The Nationals won’t be playing on Labor Day this year, but for fans of the Nationals farm system, there will be games involving all of the full season affiliates (Syracuse, Harrisburg, Potomac & Hagerstown).
For those interested, I was invited to make an appearance on the broadcast of the Harrisburg game at Bowie by Terry Byrom, Senators Director of Broadcasting/Media Relations. The game is broadcast in Central PA on 1460AM and is carried on the internet at MiLB.com. Terry and I will do a recap of the season across the affiliates.
I want to thank him & the Senators in advance for extending the courtesy. I invite you to tune into Monday’s game which starts at 2:05PM.

Matt Whitney to Syracuse
Posted by Brian Oliver in Harrisburg (AA), Syracuse (AAA) on September 2nd, 2009
IF/DH Matt Whitney was promoted from Harrisburg to Syracuse, replacing 1B/DH Brad Eldred who was placed on the temporary inactive list. No official confirmation but Eldred and his wife just had a baby, so it may be based upon that.
No replacement in Harrisburg was named.
