Draft Day 3 Running Diary
Posted by Brian Oliver in Draft on June 9th, 2010
Consider this post a clearinghouse for the last day of the draft
- 31st CA Jeremy Mayo, Texas Tech … another college junior … another player from Texas
- 32nd OF Randolph Oduber, West Oklahoma State College … Junior college guy … not Texas, but close; from Andy Seiler “Randolph Oduber is a powerful and speedy outfielder from Western Oklahoma State Junior College. Oduber originally came to Western Oklahoma State from Aruba, where he could have been signed as an international free agent if teams had noticed him ” … Andy had him as a 10th-15th round selection … I get a Naoya Washiya vibe but seems to have more power potential
- 33rd LHP Ryan Sherriff, West Los Angeles College … JuCo arm
- 34th RHP Rolando Botello, John Jay HS (TX) HS
- 35th 1B Robert (Tyler) Oliver (no relation), Wabash Valley College … Big power in big/loose frame, 30 HRs tops in nation; 2 elbow surgeries in HS, learned to throw LH, play 1B
- 36th OF Wander Nunez, same school as Oduber … Googling him, he appears to be a kid from the Dominican Republic who went to school in Philadelphia … good news – hit well with wood bat as HS senior … bad news – makeup questions
- 37th LHP Ncik Serino UMass junior … same school as 2009 draft pick Mitchell Clegg, also a lefty
- 38th LHP Nick Lee, Weatherford College (TX) … junior college
- 39th RHP John Simms, Woodlands College Park HS (TX) … Seiler “John Simms is a projectable right-handed starting pitcher from College Park High School in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Simms is known for being a rival of fellow Draft Notebook prospect Jameson Taillon, but the two are actually good friends who will be teammates in college if they get that far. In reality, College Park is actually a relatively new split-off from The Woodlands, so they would have been high school teammates if they were a few years older. Simms is a very good prospect that generally gets underrated because of his proximity to such a great prospect in Taillon. He has enough in his arsenal to project him to be a number three starter in the big leagues, and that is quite rare for someone with pitchability like he has 18. He starts his arsenal off with an 89-92 mph fastball that he can both cut and sink, and he’s adept at forcing weak contact when he’s on. His pitches move as much as almost any other prep arm in this class, but he’s not just a one pitch pitcher. He adds in a potential above-average to plus slider that he can place anywhere he wants, though he can bury it out of the strike zone more often for strikeouts against weak high school hitting. He also throws an average changeup, so with his projectability, it’s easy to understand why scouts like him. He could go in the area of the third to fifth round, but over $1 million is expected to be the price tag to sway him from Rice, so he could fall further than that” … no chance he signs; we’ve entered the intriguing guys for the future portion of the draft
- 40th SS Alex Diaz, John Ferguson School (FL) … committed to Florida Gulf Coast … from PGCC “Long lean build, good stength potential. Loose easy defensive actions, carry on his throws, feet and hands work, showed some flair defensively, 7.44 runner. Tall calm stance, loose swing, hits tall, good bat speed with more to come, solid mid field contact, handles the barrel well.”
- 41st RHP Kevin Cahill … college senior from Purdue
- 42nd SS Taylor Stark, Northwest Rankin HS (MS)
- 43rd LHP Corey Littrell, Trinity HS (KY) … Kentucky commitment … PGCC: “Projectable RHP, FB 88-90 now, will reach 92; 8-3, 2.09, 70 IP/18 BB/91 SO; grandfather played in majors”
- 44th RHP Bryce Hines, Hanahan HS (SC) … commitment to The Citadel
- 45th RF Jeffrey Bouton, John T. Hoggard HS (NC) … commitment to North Carolina
- 46th CA Erick Fernandez … Georgetown
- 47th CF David Jarreld, Goodpasture Christian School (TN) … the TN scout got two of his guys drafted (Jarreld along with 12th rd LHP Robbie Ray)
- 48th
- 49th
- 50th

this time of Nationals 1st round pick Bryce Harper.
No, not Bryan.
The Nationals selected RHP Tyler Hanks
Tyler Hanks is a power-armed right-handed relief pitcher from the Community College of Southern Nevada, home to the Bryce Harper show. Hanks originally came to CSN from Spanish Fork High School in Spanish Fork, Utah, near Provo. Spanish Fork also has placed right-handed pitcher Adam Duke in this Notebook, making them a powerhouse of sorts in the Utah baseball ranks. Hanks went largely unnoticed out of high school, but he did well enough to earn a place on a traditionally strong junior college squad at CSN, where he put together a decent freshman year. However, he’s broken out as part of a collective effort this spring, and more radar guns have been on him thanks to his famous teammate. He hasn’t been the closer at CSN, but as a setup man and critical reliever, he has the stuff to be a top-line setup man or second-division closer at the next level. His fastball is his best pitch, and it’s already plus and bordering on plus-plus. It sits 92-95 for the most part, and it has touched 98 this spring. His command isn’t great, but with velocity like that, command becomes a much less important issue. His secondary pitch is a potential plus slider that is a perfect complement to his fastball, as it looks like his fastball out of his hand until breaking hard and in on a left-handed hitter and away from a right-handed hitter. Since he hasn’t thrown a ton of innings in college, scouts like the idea of him having plenty of bullets left in his arm for a healthy career. He could go as high as the third round, but he fits better in the fourth to seventh round, and could move quickly through a minor league system.
Nice 17th round pick
