Tyler Clippard Recalled
June 21st, 2009
Update: Per the Times, Post and MASN blog, the MiLB.com transaction recalling Clippard is not in fact correct. Reports are that the Nationals might have considered Clippard if Colome was unable to pitch today. Apologies for the inaccurate report
In what is likely a replacement move for RHRP Jesus Colome (who is probably DL-bound), the Nationals recalled RHRP Tyler Clippard from Syracuse. Clippard made the shift from the rotation to the bullpen this year with good results in Triple-A. Over 23 appearances (37 2/3IP), Clippard is 4-1 with one save and a 0.96 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 15 walks

Welcome back, Tyler. May this promotion be permanent.
Colome just pitched in relief so I don’t think he’s going on DL. But then weirder things have happened.
Assuming Colome is not going to be DLed, after the showing Hanrahan had today he may be the one to go (does he have options or would he have to be DFAed?)
They probably told Clippard, “fly in just in case we have to DL Colome” and, when he was feeling OK, said to Clippard, “Psyche!”
Hanrahan does not have any options left. He would have to be designated for assignment.
Is Terrence Engles the right handed John Lannan?
Or…maybe not.

No.
“He would have to be designated for assignment.”
I’m beginning to think it may be time.
“Hanrahan does not have any options left. He would have to be designated for assignment.”
So what? Let any other team stupid enough to take him have him. Clearly, his confidence is completely shot. Maybe it will come back someday, but that day won’t be with the Nats.
Wow!! Ian Desmond has 10SB and 1CS. He got 3SB today and 0CS. In 88AB he’s hitting 307 378OBP, 511SLG, 4HR, 13RBI. Is it possible to switch Danny Espinosa to 2B because Desmond seems like he’s the future at SS.
Won’t know until both reach the majors. If that happens, then we will know if there is a need for them to switch positions. Espinosa might be the superior defender.
I thought one of Desmond strenghts was his defense.
What is the deal with Clippard?
The guy has been lights out in the minors, and our bullpen has been a mess all year. We keep calling up guys, sending others down, or signing street guys. Clippard has gotten the job done, and deserves a chance.
He’s pitched in the bigs before, and has pitched in Yankee Stadium. He’s not going to be shook by the jump to the majors this go round. Get him in the major league pen now, and hopefully he gets a chance to establish himself.
Then at some point over the rest of the year, maybe Zinicola and Storen can bring a boost as well.
Not to put a damper on the day Desmond had, but one of the SB’s was on a 1st and 3rd with no throw being made to 2nd. Another of his was on a back end of a double steal in which he stole home but the throw to the plate went to the backstop in the air.
Ian is looking better everyday, just didn’t want anyone thinking he is the next Lou Brock.
Desmond and Espinoza: remember what the Reds did with Larkin and Stillwell debate- allow them to play until one was traded to KC..
BTW. I love Desmond size(6’2 205). Perfect size for a SS.
Storen blasted again.
