The Syracuse game with Buffalo was postponed by rain.
Today: Buffalo LHP Jonathan Niese (1-6, 6.31) at Syracuse RHPs Garrett Mock (1-1, 5.73) at 1:05PM
SS Ian Desmond continued his hot stretch of hitting with a sixth inning grand slam in an 8-1 win over Binghamton (box/gamer). It was Desmond’s only hit of the game (1/5) but it put a close game out of reach. RF Ricadro Nanita was 3/4 with a double, RBI & two runs scored; Leonard Davis was 3/5 with a stolen base, run & RBI as he continued to play all over the field (2B & LF last night); LF Marvin Lowrance was 2/3 with a run scored; and 1B Bill Rhinehart was 2/5 with a double. This paced the way for RHP Carlos Martinez who picked up his third win for the Senators, allowing a run on nine hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. LHP Dave Williams struck out four over his 1 2/3 innings of relief and RHP Josh Wilkie pitched a scoreless ninth.
Today: Binghamton LHP Mike Antonini (4-2, 4.95) at Harrisburg LHP Cory VanAllen (1-4, 5.52) at 7PM
Sloppy defense led to two unearned runs in the tenth in a 7-5 Potomac loss against Wilmington (box/gamer). LHP Will Atwood gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five. CF Boomer Whiting was 1/5 with three stolen bases & a run scored; RF Aaron Seuss was 3/4 with a two-run homer & three total RBI; SS Danny Espinosa was 2/5 with a double & run scored; and LF Francisco Plasencia was 2/4 with a double & run scored.
Today: Salem (pitcher TBA) at Potomac LHP Tom Milone (3-2, 3.62) at 7:05PM
Hagerstown’s game with Lakewood was postponed by rain. It will not be made up as Thursday is the last time the teamms will face each other in the first half of the season and the bylaws of the South Atlantic League prohibit teams from playing doubleheaders on three consecutive days (the Suns have doubleheaders scheduled for Friday & Saturday with Delmarva).
Today: Lakewood RHP Jesus Sanchez (2-4, 4.82) at hagerstown RHP Marcos Frias (4-1, 2.52) at 7:05PM [note: 2009 #10 overall selection, RHRP Drew Storen, is scheduled to make his professional debut this evening]
The DSL Rockies rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the DSL Nationals 6-5 (box). 20-year old RHP Manuel Rivera started for the DSL Nats, allowing a run on four hits and a walk over five innings while striking out a pair. 20-year old LHP Raudy Almonte pitched three scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out two. 22-year old RHP Wanel Vazquez took the loss, surrendering five runs on two hits and three walks without retiring a batter. 19-year old CF Jesus Morales was 2/5 with a run scored; 17-year old 2B Estarlin Martinez was 2/5 with a run & two RBI; 20-year old RF Aridio Rodriguez was 3/5 with a run & RBI; and 20-year old CA Andruth Ramirez was 3/5.

Any word on why Willems has been shut down?
#2 by Brian Oliver - June 18th, 2009 at 08:24
I’ve asked the question
#3 by rukidding - June 18th, 2009 at 08:55
Brian, Is there a way or place to find out the % of baserunners thrown out within the organization?
#4 by Brian Oliver - June 18th, 2009 at 09:02
Baseball Reference has the CS% for each level.
Syracuse; Harrisburg; Potomac; Hagerstown; and DSL Nationals

Another stats question: I’ve just discovered that the players’ pages at minorleaguebaseball.com include batting splits for the current season (current team, actually). Anyone know where I can find such info for prior years?

How likely is it that he’s being held for the roster shuffle and then sent down to Hagerstown and/or Vermont, since he was clearly overmatched in the Carolina League?

Willem’s numbers in a full season last year in Hagerstown were decent: 3.70 era, 1.22 whip. I don’t know if he has anything to prove there. Perhaps he’s hurt?

And, for the record, the PNats game was lost — as usual — when Adam Carr came in and served up BP. How much longer do we have to put up with this thrower?

BRIAN- Along with whatever is happening to Willems, what’s going on with Hassan Pena? Why is he still on the restricted list? Back in April you stated that most people on that list were rehabbing injuries; is that the case with Pena, and if so, what was his injury and when is the timetable for return?

SD – Guess you weren’t there. Game was lost by shoddy play by just about everyone and by Jesse Estrada. What is your problem with Carr? It’s clear you have something against him, but them again, you hardly ever say anything positive about anyone.

Brian, any idea how J. Valdez is doing with the hamstring injury?
#13 by Sue Dinem - June 18th, 2009 at 16:36
I still believe — I’m a season-ticket holder and not a pollyanna. Carr has been a terrible pitcher for Potomac for the past two seasons.
Don’t believe me?
Look at his past four outings:
6/6 vs. MB 1IP-3H-3ER-BB-0K 6/9 vs. WS 1.1IP-1H-1ER-BB-K 6/12 @ FR 4IP-4H-2ER-BB-4K, HR 6/17 vs. SA 1.1IP-2H-2ER-BB-0K, HR
Or last season in Potomac 3W-4L-5SV 6.15ERA 26.1IP-29H-19R-3HR-13BB-31K
This is for a *25-year-old *collegiate pitcher, mind you, not some teenager.
Is this lack of production simple enough for you to understand, now?

Jesus Valdez has made minimal progress with his quad injury. He’s getting daily treatment and limited to light throwing only. No immediate plans to play in games anytime soon.
