Projecting the Rosters – Potomac

Roster Limitations

  • International League (Columbus): 24 active
  • Eastern League (Harrisburg): 24 active from Opening Day through the 30th day of the season and from August 10 to the end of the season; 23 active from 31st day of season until Aug. 10
  • Carolina League (Potomac): 25 active
  • South Atlantic League (Hagerstown): 25 active

My 24-man rosters will have 13 bats and 11 arms. The bats will include the starting nine (including a DH), one backup catcher, one backup middle infielder, one backup corner infielder, and one backup outfielder. In the cases where the rosters are 25, I’ll add an infielder or an outfielder. Pitching will include five starters, two long relievers/spot starters, one closer (if possible), and three short relievers (trying to make at least one a lefthander). There are going to be quite a few guys left unassigned (especially when you get to Columbus), but keep in mind that minor league teams can control more players than they can have active. This means the players can be accounted for on a given team but not be in uniform. Some of these players will often travel with the team (like a third catcher).

Here is Potomac…

  • Catchers. Jhonathan Solano (R) & Brian Peacock (R). If Jesus Flores does in fact start in Harrisburg, Peacock seems most likely to return to Potomac in 2008, else I could see Peacock getting a shot in Double-A
  • First baseman. Chris Marrero (R). Seems a likely jumping off point for the top ranked Nationals prospect. I’m sure the Nationals are hoping he makes quick work of the Carolina League so they can challenge him in Harrisburg.
  • Second baseman. Jonathan Martinez (SW). This is where the Nationals lack of depth in the middle infield will be most visible.
  • Third baseman. Matt Rogelstad (L).
  • Shortstop. Michael Martinez (SW). See second base.
  • Utility infielders. Joe Napoli (R) [1B/OF], Robby Jacobsen (R) [1B], and Trevor Lawhorn (R) [1B/3B]. The Nationals might replace one of the corner IF/corner OF guys here with another middle infielder, though I’m not sure that player is currently in the organization. I’d almost predict a deal here by the Nationals for an organizational type middle infielder.
  • Left fielder. Marvin Lowrance (L). Lowrance has bounced around Potomac the last two seasons but worked his way onto the Nationals radar this spring (he’s part of their Accelerated Development Program [ADP]).
  • Center fielder. Francisco Plasencia (L).
  • Right fielder. Aaron Seuss (R). Aside from Marrero, Seuss is the guy I’m most intrigued by (assuming he is assigned to Potomac). At this point, he does not project as a future starter but could develop into a serviceable 4th or 5th outfielder.
  • Designated hitter. Andrew Lefave (L). Acquired from the Brewers in exchnage for Ray King, Lefave is likely the promary DH if Marrero is there playing 1B.
  • Fourth outfielder. Francisco Guzman (R). Much like with the utility infielders, there is a strong chance that the Nationals have other players in camp that were signed but not yet announced. These would be more organizational type guys.
  • Starting pitchers. Jordan Zimmermann (R), Jhonny Nunez (R), Adrian Alaniz (R), Yunior Novoa (L), and Erik Arnesen (R). There are rumors that 2007 first round draft pick LHP Ross Detwiler might begin 2008 in Potomac. If that is the case, slot Detwiler first and slide everyone else down one spot in the rotation. It also would not surprise me to see RHP Brad Meyers here.
  • Long relievers. Cory VanAllen (L), Craig Stammen (R), and Jeff Mandel (R).
  • CloserClint Everts (R). Call this one a gut feel. I’m going to guess the Nationals are going to give the former first rounder a look as the closer. If not Everts, perhaps Eddy Baeza (R) gets the call.
  • Short relievers. Yader Peralta (R) and Josh Perrault (R). The Nationals could look to add a lefthander here.

Names I left off here are CA Patrick Nichols, 1B Tim Pahuta, RHP Chris Lugo and RHP David Trahan.

If the P-Nats end up with both Detwiler and Marrero, fans in Woodbridge should be excited to see the top Nationals pitching and hitting prospects in one place.

The starting pitching looks interesting with Zimmermann, Alaniz, Nunez, Mandel and VanAllen, all who are participating in the Nats ADP. Offensively, the team is a mixed bag. Not the high ceiling flavor in Hagerstown, but still an improvement on the teams that showed up from Montreal. Among the potential P-Nat bats in ADP are Marrero, Solano, Lowrance, Seuss, Lefave and Peacock.

Hmm. I keep up with Trahan.. 2.70 ERA on the year in Potomac and Harrisburg last season…. AND it was his first year from a new sidearm slot. I see no reason why he wouldn’t begin this season in AA.

    Brian,

I am relatively new to the website and the Nationals org as a fan. Stumbled across this site and can’t believe the awesome content you put out. Really great job.

Was in Hagerstown last year passing through and saw Meyers pitch. Was curious if the projected starters you list in Potomac are right, where does he end up?

    Keep up the great work!

    Jeff

Interested in the thought that Marrero would return to Potomac while Daniel and Maxwell advance. The Nats tend to be agressive in moving up their prospects. Is the move to 1B the primary reason why you think Marrero returns to Potomac rather than starting the season in AA Harrisburg?

Jesse – Trahan is on the short list in Harrisburg for short relief as well.

Jeff – Thanks for the compliment. If Meyers isn’t in Potomac, I see him In Harrisburg with Detwiler. There really is going to be numbers crunch when it comes to the SPs.

Pilchard – Yes, the reason I have Marrero in Potomac is to allow him time to learn 1B while still refining his approach at the plate. He is still young for the Carolina League and there is little reason to push him too fast. He could quickly move to Harrisburg if he mashes in Potomac.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by the hitters in Potomac? Outside of Marrero, I don’t see anyone who will ever sniff a ML starting lineup.

Hoagie – You are not the only one. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Nationals organize their guys. Whether it makes sense to keep the premium bats together or spread them out amongst the affiliates.

I like the list of players in potomac. I had the privilage of watching several of these players in hagerstown last year. Just one question where do you think zachary baldwin will be at? i didnt see him on your lists and after his year last year i thought he would be a shoe in for this list.

sunsitis – Surprisingly, the Nationals cut Zach Baldwin back in January. Still unsure of the reason why.

Ok. Guess I jumped the gun. I just figured after a 17 or 18-inning scoreless streak, great ERA, etc. in Potomac, then a strong finish in Harrisburg, that Trahan certainly would begin the year there. Thx 4 the cool site by the way; gives us fans in TX a way to keep up to speed!

FWIW, Kasten promised PNats fans great pitching this season first and foremost. Perhaps the thinking is that Detwiler and Zimmermann (note the two n’s before rushing to comment) will be paired together to push one another. I’m just excited to finally see only a couple of 24- and 25-year-olds on this projected roster vs. this time last year.

Whats up with patrick nichols & chris lugo?

  12. #12 by Brian Oliver - March 5th, 2008 at 07:18

Steve – Not sure. They could end up on a roster but not active, they could stick around extended spring training, or they could be released. By my count, the Nationals have far more players than they have roster slots, so some players are not going to have a chair when the music stops.

Brian, How could Zachary Baldwin be released? I saw him in hagerstown several times and he and nunez were by far their best starters. And i know zachary was very good out of the pen as well? That kind of puts me in awe bc he was such a great kid. The nats will lose out on this one And reasons why???

Where does Josh Wilkie stand in this whole mix? He dominated the Sally League and finished with 11 saves on a team that was very bad. You had him starting the year in Potomac or even higher at your year end team wrap ups when you covered HTown so I am a little confused. The press was good at the end of the year from you but it seems you have him lost in the mix now????

  15. #15 by Brian Oliver - March 6th, 2008 at 07:43

John – This is the issue with the number of players the Nationals have. Wilkie by all rights should be part of the Potomac bullpen but trying to fit all of these arms into a limited number of slots is bound to leave people without a role. Wilkie is in the mix with Peralta, Perrault, Baeza, and Everts.

Looks like it’s gonna be Detwiler in Potomac. Also, glad to see you feel Marrero gets a shot @ 1B this year. Saw him last year; the big club needs to find a bat in the future, and he MIGHT be just that. Hope I get a chance to see some P-Nats games this year.
