- 16th round (490) CF Christopher Blackwood from Gloucester County Junior College: All I can figure out is he stole 26 bases and batted 289 this year for Gloucester. He is from New jersey meaning this was likely a Dana Brown pick.
- 17th round (520) RHP Luke Pisker, Junior from Virginia Commonwealth University: He was the closer at VCU. He pitches sidearm. FB in high 80s
- 18th round (550) 1B Sawyer Carroll, Junior from University of Kentucky: Gap hitter with little power; below average defender
- 19th round (580) RHP Jeff Mandel, Senior from Baylor University: From PG … “pitches in the upper 80s, while touching 90 with a good slider and changeup. Working as a starter instead of in the closer’s role has enabled him to improve his command and feel for his off speed pitches, according to scouts. Mandel is an above-average athlete who played first base and outfield for Baylor up until this season”
- 20th round (610) CF Dan Cook, Junior from Florida Atlantic University: Balanced set of skills but not one that stands out; highly projectable; could be a 2B
- 21st round (640) 3B Anthony Benner from Southwestern Junior College (CA): Not much I can find on Benner. Drafted by the Dodgers in 2005 and 2006.
- 22nd round (670) SS Jake Rogers, Senior from South Dakota State University: from BBA … “Like he was a year ago, when he went undrafted as a junior, shortstop Jake Rogers is the best college position player prospect in the Dakotas. He has some bat speed and arm strength, though he’ll probably have to move to second base in pro ball.”
- 23rd round (700) LHP Dave Duncan, Sophomore from Georgia Tech: BBA ranked him #145 overall in the draft. Drafted in the 15th round of 2005 draft by the Twins but turned down $500K to attend Tech. Herky-jerky motion. Has control issues, but has three developing pitches. Likely to return to Georgia Tech to improve his draft position.
- 24th round (730) CA Ricky Nolan, Junior from Saint Leo University: Named First Team All-Sunshine State Conference; “Nolan was solid as the Lions’ backstop batting a career-best .341 with career highs in RBI (37), doubles (14), hits (58) and runs scored (32). He had just four errors and a .986 fielding percentage, while gunning down 14 potential base stealers and picking off three base-runners”
- 25th round (760) CF Christopher Berroa from Pennsauken HS (NJ): Another likely Dana Brown selection. He is committed to UNC-Greensboro but is considered signable. Speedy outfielder with above average arm. Very raw but projectable
- 26th round (790) Kelvin Clark from Redan HS (GA): Sounds alot like Berroa. Potential five tool player. Very fast. Strong arm. Flashes power. Considered signable. Project player
- 27th round (820) RF Aaron Suess, Senior from California Baptist University: From California Baptist site … “Reigning GSAC Player of the Year and CBU’s first-ever NAIA All-American first team selection senior Aaron Seuss returns for one final season … Will start in right and hit third … Coming off a great off-season … Has the potential to be one of the best hitters in the history of the program … Has added a leadership aspect to his game this year and will serve as captain.”
- 28th round (850) CF Brandon “Boomer” Whiting, Senior from Louisville University: Another fast guy. From PG … “Whiting’s big tool is his explosive speed. He can run the 60 in 6.3 seconds and led the nation with 69 stolen bases in 80 attempts as Louisville entered NCAA regional play … above-average defensive center fielder, but his arm has been a liability this season as he missed most of the 2006 season while undergoing labrum surgery”
- 29th round (880) RHP Justin Phillabaum, Junior from Florida Atlantic University: Has had injury problems, but scouts like his low 90s FB; considered projectable.
- 30th round (910) RHP Zack Pitts, Junior from Louisville University: from PG “doesn’t have a dominating pitch with a fringe-average fastball at 89-91 mph and just an average breaking ball. But he maintains his velocity throughout a game, gets arm-side sink on his fastball, works aggressively with an easy delivery, and commands all three of his pitches. He also has an 80-81 mph changeup. He projects as a No. 5 starter in a big league rotation”
- 31st round (940) OF Dave Stewart St. John Vianney HS (MO): Has the tools to have been a first five round draft pick but committment to Nebraska makes his signing a question. Could be a pitcher but likely better suited as a RF. Flashes power and has above average speed for his size (6′6″ 220lbs).
- 32nd round (969) CA Dan Killian Chippewa Hills HS (MI): Killian was rumored to have gone in perhaps the first seven rounds, but a commitment to Kentucky may have led to his slide down the draft. Missed much of the season while recuperating from a meniscus tear in his knee. According to BBA, “He has an athletic catcher’s build (6′3″ 180lbs) and a strong arm capable of producing 1.8-second pop times from his mitt to second base. He has bat speed and plus power potential, and he runs well for a catcher. That said, there are questions about his ability to make consistent contact and his receiving skills. Some scouts think he’d have a brighter future on the mound, where they project he’d throw 93-94 mph.” Tough sign without a question.
- 33rd round (998) RHP Jeff McCollum, Senior from Southern University A&M: Southern’s closer this year. Low 90s FB. Battled injuries. Scouts believe he still has not scratched the surface of his abilities; needs a secondary pitch.
- 34th round (1027) RHP Kenn Kasparek, Junior from the University of Texas: BIG GUY 6′10″ 250lbs. Did not pitch in 2007 due to Tommy John surgery in the offseason. He has showed a low-90s FB. He is a gamble. But could be a worthwhile project.
- 35th round (1056) CF Alex Floyd, Hillsborough Community College (JUCO): Batted 287 for HCC over 129AB with 17 SB in 21 attempts
- 36th round (1085) RHP Martin Beno, Junior from Oklahoma State University: Middle relief pitcher for the Cowboys in 2007. Has a low 90s FB. Needs secondary pitch
- 37th round (1113) RHP Devin Drag, Senior from Chapman University: 16-0 in 22 appearances (14 starts) with 123 H, 101K and 34BB in 119 2/3 IP.
- 38th round (1141) RHP Shane Erb, Hillsborough Community College (JUCO): Erb pitched 19 innings for HCC allowing 20 hits and 11 walks while striking out 8. Not much else out there about him
- 39th round (1169) RHP Caleb Staudt, Senior from St. Mary’s University (TX): 5-1 in 8 starts with 35K, 39H, and 23BB in 41 1/3IP
- 40th round (1197) LHP Kai Tuomi, Senior from University of Evansville: 10-4 in 15 starts for Evansville. 97 2/3 IP 111H 43K 25BB. Here is a story from Evansville University.
- 41st round (1223) LHP/1B Iden Nazario from Miami Southridge HS (FL): University of Miami recruit. Two way player (also plays 1B). Has reached 90s on the mound.
- 42nd round (1249) LF Garrett Bass, Senior from Jacksonville State University: Batted 294 in 38 games for Jacksonville State. 1HR 5/7 in SB attempts
- 43rd round (1275) LHP Michael Martinez from Christopher C0lumbus HS (FL): Cannot find anything
- 44th round (1301) 3B Clint Pridmore from Santa Rosa JuCo (CA): Another one I cannot find anything about
- 45th round (1327) CA Travis Reagan, Senior from Rice University: Was the backup catcher for Rice. Batted 170 with 2HR 3RBI in 47AB. Solid defensive catcher.
- 46th round (1351) CA Ryan Cisterna from Chandler Gilbert Comm College (AZ): Defense-first catcher with a cannon arm. Not as developed offensively. Could attend Arkansas if he doesn’t sign.
- 47th round (1374) RHP Jeff Walters from St Petersburg JuCo: 13G 41 1/3 IP 48H 47K 11BB
- 48th round (1396) RHP Kyle Gunderson, Senior from Rice University: RP for the Owls. 12G 13IP 13H 11K 4BB
- 49th round (1417) CF Jake Dugger, Senior from University of Arkansas-Fayetteville: From DaveVanHorn.com
- 50th round (1438) CF Lindon Bond, Junior from Texas Southern University: Cannot find anthing beyond his college page

Are they done. btw I sent a email to Stan Kasten and he responded(DURING THE DRAFT) It was amazing that he would actually respond but I could tell he was busy. He only said like 3 sentences but it’s so cool that he would actually do that

From last year’s draft I seem to remember a couple of things: that pretty much all of all the college players sign and that teams aim to sign about 25 guys. In this year’s draft (probably because the elimination of DFE) I count 29 college guys (not even including the sophomore). I assume we want to sign all of the high school guys in the first few rounds and some of the HS and JuCo guys in the later rounds. That could be a pretty large draft class. Is it possible to have too many players signed?

Brian,
Thanks alot for all the great work, I really appreciate it.
Overall I’m happy with the draft. I love the first 4 picks, getting a mix of projectiable prep guys and college pitchers. I think we overdrafted a little in the 3-5 range but love the McGeary pick. Gonna have to trust them on the later round picks. Overall I like it alot, can’t wait to get these guys signed and on the field

Brian — Can you guesstimate when and where these players will play in 2007? Perhaps a summary by affiliate so that folks can guage who they might see. As you might imagine, not having seen a win in nearly a month at Potomac has me looking to the 2nd half for some “new blood.”
P.S. SSDS for Everts last night. Sickels may be onto something about converting him to a reliever, though — he set down the side in order in the 1st inning and threw first-pitch strikes to all three batters.
