Who is the best pitcher to call up to help the big league club in the starting rotation? Do the Nats have anyone?
On Patterson, when an arm goes that dead, what are the chances of it coming back to former form? A friend last night said he thought Patterson was through. Any thoughts on this?

Ed – I believe the Nationals would want Joel Hanrahan first, though he is on the DL in Columbus. Emiliano Fruto is on the DL there as well. Tim Redding went last night (and got hit hard) but he’s lined up with Williams spot. Felix Diaz or Billy Traber or Chris Michalak or Make Bacsik are options.
As for Patterson, I don’t know whether he is done, but I don’t think he’ll ever be the #1 starter most expect. I know I am in the minority but he seems he’ll be a middle of the rotation guy with infrequent flashes of brilliance.

OK, to rephrase the question, who is the best pitcher to call up who is not on the DL and who doesn’t get blasted most times out?

Ummm … how about hmmmm? Not getting blasted makes it tough to name a name.
Traber or Redding seem most likely

You do a great job in this site. If you get a chance at some point:
Could you provide some brief analysis as to what pitcher is best to call up? He should have decent performance in recent outings (that would seem to leave out Redding?), be healthy, and also meet the team’s goal of not rushing someone up too soon.

I agree, Traber or Redding are the logical chioces with Hanrahan and Fruto on the DL, but both would require moving someone off of the 40-man roster. This could be done by shifting someone to the 60-day DL, but otherwise would require waivers. So, maybe Beltran Perez (who pitched last night for Harrisbug, so is in cycle, and is already on the 40-man roster) for a spot start or two until Hanranhan or Fruto is ready.

I realize that their options are vary limited, but the Nats can not call up Tim Redding. He is awful. His AAA ERA is over 7, and he has yet to pitch more than 6 innings in a game this year. I would be shocked if he made it to the 4th inning in a MLB start.
Hanrahan was clearly the Clippers best pitcher before going on the DL. Wonder if he is close to being ready to pitch. Amazing that between the MLB club and AAA, the Nats have 5 starters on the DL. I guess when you consider that the Nats were bargain shopping for pitchers that it is not that surprising.

Thanks Ed. The Nats have answered the question for us
The Washington Nationals today placed right-handed pitcher Jerome Williams on the 15-Day Disabled List with a right shoulder strain and selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Billy Traber from Columbus of the Triple-A International League. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Nationals transferred first baseman Nick Johnson from the 15- to the 60-Day Disabled List. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcements

Anybody know the status of Brandon Claussen? He’s disappeared from the radar since before spring training.

Claussen is still rehabbing from arthro surgery on his left shoulder. Word is he won’t be ready for game action until July

What is the deal with Broadway? Will Whitesell get his chance this year? Why is he not in AAA. He simply beat out Jennings for first base in Harrisburg, yet Jennings still continues to start in Columbus! What’s the deal? Whitesell has shown he is ready for a big year and deserves a promotion.

Not sure what has happened to Broadway (aside from being injured). I’d imagine the Nationals are going to make some roster decisions later this month as the first half of the minor league season wraps up. Though Whitesell is probably better served staying in AA where he is likely to face better quality pitching

Broadway is not an MLB player. He was given some hype in DC because he was close to the Nats’ best hitting prospect in the upper-minors, but that was soley a function of a pathetic farm system that MLB left for the Lerners. By way of comparison, Kory Casto is a far more productive minor league hitter, and look at his MLB performance to date. Larry Broadway is not even a fringe MLB prospect.
